Why Monkeys Keep Out of the Way is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis[]

At the start of the story, an exhausted serval flops down in the grass and begs a passing monkey for help in ridding herself of fleas. Monkey complies, but while he's picking out her fleas, Serval falls asleep. Taking advantage of this, Monkey decides to play a trick on her by tying her tail to a tree.

When Serval awakens, she is unable to untie herself until a kind snail agrees to help her. Swearing revenge on Monkey, Serval convinces her friends to hold a fake funeral for her, and at the funeral, she leaps up and tries to grab Monkey. However, he is too quick for her and manages to escape into a tree. To this day, monkeys stay in trees to avoid angry servals.
