Why Leopard Hates Dogs is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis[]

Dog lives with his friend, Leopard, and Leopard's wife. Despite being friends with Dog, Leopard treats him more like a servant. One day, Leopard suggests to Dog that they visit an anthill and see if the ants are ready to swarm. Leopard's hunch proves correct, and the two bring their prey to Leopard's wife, who cooks them a magnificent stew.

After the meal, there are many ants left over, and Leopard's wife decides to dry them out so that Leopard can bring them to her parents and siblings. A few days later, Leopard sets off on his journey and tasks Dog with carrying the bundle, while he himself carries his drum.

Along the way, the two run into some friends, who ask Leopard if he will play the drum for them. Leopard agrees, but while he is playing, Dog grows angry that he must bear Leopard's bundle while being ignored by his friends. After the performance, Dog and Leopard continue on their journey, and Dog asks to take a rest. But instead of sleeping, Dog eats all the dried ants and fills the bundle with grass instead.

The two continue on their way and arrive at the home of Leopard's wife's family, where Leopard is greeted warmly and Dog is ignored. Later, they sit down to exchange news with Leopard, and Dog uses the distraction to slip away. When it at last comes time to eat, Leopard opens the bundle and realizes what Dog has done. He swears revenge on Dog, and to this day, dogs and leopards are enemies.
