Growling, Vitani rises and asks Nuka about Kovu's whereabouts. She is displeased when the older lion makes it clear that he doesn't care about Kovu's well-being but smirks when he complains about how ''he'' should have been the chosen one, not Kovu. Vitani scoffs, daring Nuka to tell this to Zira before pointing out that their mother has arrived. Zira ignores Nuka, depositing Kovu onto the dry, cracked ground, where Vitani goads Kovu into a playful fight.

Vitani is a young adult female lion. She is the daughter of Zira, and the sister of Nuka and Kovu. She was the scout and second-in-command of the Outsiders until she reformed and joined Simba's pride. She currently serves as the leader of the Lion Guard.

Biography

Backstory

Vitani was born a Pride Lander shortly before the fall of Scar and was exiled to the Outlands along with her mother, brothers, and Scar's band of loyal followers. Unlike Nuka, she never resented Kovu for being the "chosen one." Instead, she expressed pride in Kovu and supported his role as Scar's chosen heir.

The Lion King II: Simba's Pride

Cubhood

Vitani: Nuka! Where's Kovu? Did you leave him out there on his own again?
Nuka: Hey, it's every lion for himself out here. That little termite's gotta learn to be on his own!
Vitani: Mother's gonna be mad. She told you to watch him!
Nuka: Oh, who cares? I should've been the chosen one! I'm the oldest, I'm the strongest, I'm the smartest...
—Nuka and Vitani[src]

As a cub, Vitani battles with a dry tree root, sparing her approaching older brother Nuka a glaring glance when she hears his jeering taunts. She ignores him and continues to tug on the root, only truly acknowledging him when he cuts it with his claw.

Growling, Vitani rises and asks Nuka about Kovu's whereabouts. She is displeased when the older lion makes it clear that he doesn't care about Kovu's well-being but smirks when he complains about how he should have been the chosen one, not Kovu. Vitani scoffs, daring Nuka to tell this to Zira before pointing out that their mother has arrived. Zira ignores Nuka, depositing Kovu onto the dry, cracked ground, where Vitani goads Kovu into a playful fight.

Shortly after Zira's return, Vitani is seen singing "My Lullaby," accompanying her mother and brother in song. While Nuka clearly disapproves of Kovu becoming king, Vitani doesn't mind, protecting him from Nuka and enthusiastically cheering upon Zira's request.

After her talk with Kion, Zira returns to her children and lies to Jasiri that Kion has allowed the Outsiders to keep the watering hole. She then takes her cubs to where she has surrounded Kion with her lionesses.

During the confrontation, the rest of the Lion Guard arrives to fight the Outsiders. Vitani prepares herself to fight, but gets pinned down by Fuli. They back the lions up against a wall, and Kion uses the Roar of the Elders to blast them away. The pride lands in a termite mound, which Zira declares to be their new home.

Vitani leads a Lion Guard comprised of former Outsiders

After hearing that Zira is planning to attack the Pride Lands, the Lion Guard returns to their homeland. Not recognizing Kion because of his scar, Vitani and her lionesses mistake the Lion Guard for enemies. A fight ensues between the two groups, and Kion attempts to use the Roar against Vitani and her lionesses. However, Kiara and Kovu interject and reveal that Vitani and the rest of Zira's pride have joined the Pride Landers.

The next day, Vitani and her lionesses meet Kion and his friends at the Lair of the Lion Guard. Vitani explains that as the future king's sister, she believes that it is her responsibility to protect the Pride Lands, so she has formed her own Lion Guard in their absence. Kion argues that he is the future queen's brother and has the mark of the Guard along with the Roar of the Elders, but Vitani and her guard still refuse to back down.

File:Vitani ROTE.png

Vitani uses the Roar of the Elders

They start a competition to decide which one is more worthy to become the defender of the Pride Lands. After both sides have two wins, Vitani suggests that the last competition for the fiercest should be a mashindano. This shocks Kion, who tells Vitani she has no chance of winning since he has the Roar, but Vitani tells Kion that she doesn't need the roar because she believes that she's fierce enough to lead the Lion Guard.

Kion deems Vitani worthy to lead the Lion Guard and bestows her the mark of the Lion Guard along with the Roar of the Elders. Vitani demonstrates the Roar, and the mark of the Lion Guard disappears from Kion and his friends, officially establishing Vitani's Lion Guard and ending Kion's Guard. Vitani then witnesses Askari's spirit appearing and commending Kion for his mastery of the Roar. She asks Kion what it means to master the Roar, and Kion replies by using the Roar to lift Pride Rock, which astonishes Vitani.

Physical appearance

Vitani bears a strong resemblance to her mother, but she is differentiated by a tuft of hair on her head, freckles, blue eyes, dark eye rims, dark pink nose, and a less prominent jaw. As a young adult, her ears are striped with black. However, this feature was not present as a cub and appeared intermittently after it was introduced. Vitani's front claws are, like the rest of the Outsiders, constantly unsheathed. Later, she get the Mark of the Guard on her left shoulder after Kion appointed her as the new leader of the Lion Guard.

Personality and traits

Hey, Kovu. Wanna fight?
―Vitani to her younger brother[src]
Lion-king2-disneyscreencaps

A young Vitani smirks at her brother Nuka, reflecting her sarcastic and spunky nature

Even as a cub, Vitani displays aggressive and vicious characteristics, taking enjoyment in taunting and fighting her brothers. Despite her more violent tendencies, Vitani is known to be a stickler to the rules, following her mother without question and not doubting Kovu as Nuka so often does. Her attitude, even as a cub, is confident and spunky, and she's not afraid to outwit her larger and older brother. Unlike Nuka who hates Kovu for being treated specially by their mother, Vitani is on good terms with her younger brother and often plays with him. She also scolds Nuka if he neglects his duty to watch over their younger brother, and protects him if Nuka bullies him.

Vitani seems to have picked up a sarcastic nature from her mother, which she tends to use against Nuka. Even as a young adult, she is shown picking on Nala for the disappearance of Kiara. She seems to take great enjoyment in fighting and chasing Simba during the ambush, grinning maniacally throughout the chase. Her overconfidence is shown when she recklessly leaps at Nala, a much larger and more well-built lioness than herself.

Lion-king2-disneyscreencaps

An older Vitani prepares to attack Simba, reflecting her aggressive and vicious nature

Like her mother and the rest of her pride, Vitani dislikes and is distrustful of hyenas. When she first meets Kion, she is skeptical of his friendship with Jasiri, but does display some curiosity over it.

Vitani's soft side shows through when she is saddened by Nuka's death and grieves for him, showing that despite their strained relationship, Vitani still cares for her older brother. She is also the first of the Outsiders to join Simba's pride. This daring action showcases her courageous side, as she is not only willing to stand up to her mother, but to her entire pride. Brash and vicious as she is, Vitani is level-headed and not nearly as cruel as her vindictive mother. Despite being raised to fight and kill, Vitani sees the appeal and reason in peace, and is willing to take a stand for what's right.

After joining Simba's pride, Vitani's violent and ruthless tendencies diminish greatly. She becomes much friendlier and less aggressive with other animals, and is no longer as mocking of others as she once was. This includes hyenas, a species she treated with disdain as a cub. However, she still retains her fondness for combat, keeping her manic smile when fighting.

Return433

Vitani reconciles her differences with Kion, reflecting her kind and humble nature as a Pride Lander

As the leader of the Lion Guard, Vitani displays strong leadership qualities and great camaraderie with her teammates, being able to effectively lead them into battle and forming close friendships with them.

Vitani still remains brash, however, as she is quick to attack the Lion Guard when they enter the Pride Lands. She is also stubborn, as she refuses to back down, insisting that her Lion Guard deserves to exist over Kion's. Her self-confidence is shown again when she challenges Kion to a mashindano despite him having an advantage with the Roar of the Elders. Her confidence and determination impresses Kion so much that he willingly forfeits the match. Vitani also displays signs of humility and humbleness, as she is grateful to Kion for honorably surrendering his position, and displays no envy or frustration over his superiority with the Roar, only pleasant astonishment.

Trivia

  • When Nala confronts Vitani during the final battle, she appears to say "Shetani" rather than "Vitani," pointing out the potential that the name was changed after production had already begun. The name "Vitani" means "battle" in Swahili, and the filmmakers may have changed her name to Vitani because "Shetani" means "she-demon" in Swahili.[1] Interestingly, the word "vitani" is actually the Swahili word for both "ducks" (in the plural sense, where "kitani" is singular) and "linens," though it is unlikely that the writers would have known this.[2]
  • She is the first female leader of the Lion Guard, and her Guard is the first whose members are all females.
  • She is so far the only known leader of the Lion Guard who is not born from the royal family, and received the title and the Roar of the Elders from her predecessor.
  • She is the first leader of the Lion Guard who is the older sibling of the ruler, though she's still a second-born child.
