Yours is the last pride in the Valley of Kings, which means everything the light touches belongs to me! There will be one ruler, one Lion King.
Kiros to Obasi[src]

The Valley of Kings is a vast collection of territories ruled by individual lion prides. Kiros, the leader of the Outsiders, waged a campaign to eliminate every pride in the Valley of Kings and was largely successful. The last surviving lions from the Valley of Kings fled their homeland and founded a new kingdom beyond its borders.

Governance[]

Kiros 3

Kiros waged a campaign to eliminate every pride in the Valley of Kings.

Unlike the Pride Lands, which is ruled by a single monarch, the Valley of Kings is separated into different territories controlled by different prides. Most prides in the Valley of Kings function as monarchies, in which a sovereign's will is law and his heir is destined to be the next king. According to Obasi, in order for a lion to take over a pride, there must be a formal challenge. However, Kiros defied tradition and civility by slaughtering every pride in the Valley of Kings, as it was his goal to rule the kingdom as its sole Lion King.

Also unlike the Pride Lands, the lions do not directly govern other species. Rather, they stick to their own prides and only interact with other species when hunting them.[1]

History[]

Mufasa's induction into Obasi's pride[]

We do not associate with Outsiders.
―Obasi[src]

One day, the prince of Obasi's pride, Taka, saved a fellow lion cub named Mufasa from being eaten by crocodiles. He and his mother, Eshe, brought the cub before Obasi, who declared that they ate Outsiders and urged Mufasa to run away. Mufasa retorted that he was the fastest cub to have ever lived, and so, Obasi decided to test him against Taka in a race; if he won, he could stay with the pride, but if he lost, he would be eaten. To Obasi's disapproval, Mufasa won the race. Though Obasi allowed the cub to stay with the pride, he forced him to live with the females of the pride rather than the males. Despite his father's ill feelings toward Mufasa, Taka bonded with him, and the two came to consider one another brothers.[1]

Kiros's campaign[]

As part of Kiros's campaign to slaughter every pride in the Valley of Kings, his son Shaju and fellow Outsider Azibo attacked Eshe while she was out hunting. Mufasa leaped to her defense and managed to kill Shaju, after which Azibo fled. Eshe and Mufasa reported what had happened to Obasi, and Mufasa urged his pride to stay alert, for the Outsiders were nearby.

Mufasa and Taka flee the Valley of Kings to start a new life.

Meanwhile, Azibo reported to Kiros what had happened, only for Akua and Amara to determine that he had abandoned Shaju to die. As recompense for his son's death, Kiros allowed his pride to kill Azibo, then set his sights on Obasi's pride. Chigaru warned his pride that the Outsiders were coming, and so, Obasi sent Taka away to start a new life elsewhere, with Mufasa accompanying him as his protector.

After the young lions had fled, the Outsiders confronted Obasi's pride, and Kiros revealed his plan to slaughter every pride in the Valley of Kings so that he could rule as the sole Lion King. The Outsiders then obliterated Obasi's pride.

Sarabi clip 8

Mufasa and Taka meet Sarabi.

In order to get vengeance for Shaju's death, Kiros led his pride on a hunt for Mufasa and Taka. The brothers eventually met a young lioness named Sarabi, who revealed that the Outsiders had killed almost everyone in her pride. The three lions, along with Sarabi's hornbill scout Zazu, ended up forming an alliance against the Outsiders.

Meanwhile, Rafiki got exiled from his troop due to his mystical visions. He ran into Mufasa and his allies, and vowed to lead them to the fabled paradise of Milele. Together, they left the Valley of Kings in search of better prospects, with the Outsiders on their tails.[1]
