"Under the Stars (Score)" is a musical piece composed by Hans Zimmer for The Lion King. It is the underscore that plays during Simba's encounter with Rafiki and Mufasa's ghost.
Use
In the soundtracks
"Under the Stars (Score)" was released on May 31, 1994, as part of the original motion picture soundtrack. It was one of four scores included in the release, including "This Land (Score)", "...To Die For (Score)", and "King of Pride Rock (Score)". Shortly after the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, the complete film score was released to the public, though it was retracted after one day. During its brief release, "Under the Stars (Score)" was heard in full as a track titled "Nala - Simba - Mufasa Ghost". On June 24, 2014, The Legacy Collection: The Lion King was released, with "Under the Stars (Score)" once more released in full under the title "Remember Who You Are".
In the stage musical, parts of "Under the Stars (Score)" can be heard in the cue "Pool Reveal". Parts of the score are cut, as the "He Lives in You" musical number replaces much of the original scene.
In the film
Simba reflects on his past, a scene that comprises a portion of "Under the Stars (Score)"
"Under the Stars (Score)" is first heard in The Lion King after the "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" sequence. The score plays through the initial conversation between Simba and Nala, then cuts to Simba lamenting his father's death. It carries through parts of his interaction with Rafiki, including the scene where he chases Rafiki through dense jungle, then cuts to the triumphant "Busa Simba" theme heard in the end credits of the film.
Several sections of underscore were cut from this track. Early in the score, the track skips over the heated argument between Simba and Nala, and jumps straight to Simba's lamentations under the stars. When the track reaches Simba's conversation with Rafiki, several sections of score are cut, and the revelation of Mufasa's ghost is removed entirely.
