The meerkats lived in an ordinary colony. Every meerkat in the colony had specific duties in which they all take seriously, such as a tailor, a bookseller, a grocer, and a gate guard. If a meerkat fails to perform their duty, they will be sentenced to banishment. Timon's duty was to guard the colony's back gate, which was the most tedious job as no one ever goes through the back gate, unless they are banished. He did, however, have a view of the colony's castle, which was inhabited by the Duke Meerkat and his daughter Tatiana and guarded by Fred.
When the duke leaves for the day, Fred, after going to the grocery store to get a snack, convinces Timon that it's his chance to speak to Tatiana, knowing that he has a massive crush on her. When Timon leaves his post (not without placing a mop as a dummy), a cobra invades the colony and kidnaps Tatiana, which makes everyone believe she's dead. The meerkats realize that Timon abandoned his post and the guards chase him until Timon gets caught by the Duke Meerkat. Having heard about the loss of his daughter, he banishes Timon from the colony, sentencing him to life as an outcast.
After Timon meets Pumbaa for the first time, they see that Tatiana is still alive but guarded by the cobra. So the two rescue her and return to Timon's colony, with the meerkats being proud of Timon for rescuing the princess. As a reward, Timon is offered to marry Tatiana and live a better life, but gives it up for Pumbaa, since the duke refuses to accept the warthog as a colony member.
As Jean studies Timon and Pumbaa, she wonders why Timon is outside of his colony, to which the meerkat replies that it's because he chose to be.
The meerkats lived in a colony far away from Pride Rock, digging tunnels in constant fear of hyenas. Because Timon was the worst digger, he was disliked by his fellow meerkats, including his Uncle Max but except his mother. Ma convinced Max to put Timon on sentry duty, but it ended in disaster as Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed invaded. As the meerkats (except Ma) blamed Timon for the invasion, Timon decided to find a new home as he felt he didn't fit in.
Timon is known for being a motormouth and is thus ignored while on sentry duty, as he is known to report meaningless doings to his colony mates. When real danger strikes, an eagle, the other meerkats don't believe Timon's warnings and nearly die as a result. The colony blames Timon, who runs away to escape their accusations.
