The Tortoise's Punishment is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.
Synopsis[]
Tortoise and his wife try to preserve their food through a drought, but when provisions run out, Tortoise's wife suggests that they go to her father for help. Though disinclined to ask for help from his father-in-law, Tortoise agrees, and the two visit his house, where they are loaded with food.
However, despite their careful rationing, they eventually run out of food again, and Tortoise's wife begs her husband to visit her father again. This time, Tortoise refuses, unwilling to beg for help, and instead sneaks over in the night to steal his father-in-law's food. On his way out of the house, he accidentally drops the food and makes a frightful clamor, which draws the attention of his father-in-law. Furious, his father-in-law ties him to a tree and publicly shames him until the other animals convince him to bring Tortoise down. Both tortoises learn their lesson that day.
