The Long Wait

Too much of an argument is a bad thing. Look what happened to the pig!

The Pig's Tale is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis[]

Long ago, pigs had long snouts and tails. This all changed when the pig and the cow had an argument over who was the stronger animal. While the pig argued that he was heavier and therefore stronger, the cow asserted that her great size made her stronger. Finally, the two asked the rabbit to judge which of them was stronger. The rabbit agreed to the challenge, though inwardly he did not like either animal, as they both frequently ate up the sweet grass he liked.

The three met beneath a tree, where the rabbit explained that things could only be decided through a trial of strength. He instructed the two animals to pull each other by the tail in order to determine who was the stronger. After the rabbit tied their tails together, the pig and the cow each pulled as hard as they could until the pig's tail snapped, and the pig slid down the slope and landed face-first in an anthill.

The cow ascended the hill without incident, and the rabbit declared her the winner. The pig, however, had suffered damage on the nose and tail from the fall. To this day, pigs are born with shortened snouts and small tails.
