The Honey Guide is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis[]

Honey Guide and Wheatear are good friends who live together and share their meals. Both birds love honey, but Honey Guide is considerably better at finding it than Wheatear. One day, the two set out in search of honey and agree to signal with a nod if they find any. As usual, Honey Guide spots the honey first, but the two agree to come for the honey the next day since it is getting late.

That night, Wheatear grows so hungry that he seeks out the honey and eats it all. Come morning, Honey Guide finds the honey depleted and questions Wheatear suspiciously. Wheatear, however, does not indulge what he has done, and the birds set out in search of more honey. Once more, Honey Guide spots it first, but Wheatear suggests that they wait and set a trap of birdlime for the thief.

Honey Guide tells Wheatear that they should set the trap the next day, but he secretly coats the honey tree in birdlime himself. That night, Wheatear steals out to eat the honey, but he gets himself trapped in the birdlime. Honey Guide finds Wheatear's dead body the next morning and sadly laments his friend's choices. To this day, Honey Guide is the only bird that is able to guide others to sources of honey.
