Do not flaunt your good fortune in front of creatures that are suffering. No good will come of it – look what happened to Baboon.

The Greedy Baboon is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis[]

During a famine, Baboon eats a large pot of soup in front of many starving animals. An impala ventures to ask if Baboon will share, but Baboon simply bares his teeth and continues to eat. Not long after, a young serval spots Baboon and bounds excitedly toward the food. Baboon, however, bares his teeth once more and frightens the young one away.

All afternoon, Baboon eats his soup and growls away any animal who dares ask him for a bite. By the end of his meal, he has grown so fat that he cannot stand. The other animals, who are still angry over Baboon's selfishness, scheme together as to how they should move Baboon.

While Squirrel gathers a spade, some other animals build up a fire. Together, they heat the spade in the fire, then touch it to Baboon's backside. In a moment, Baboon leaps to his feet and races away from the other animals. To this day, baboons have raw red bottoms.
