Test of Strength is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis[]

Elephant nearly steps on Tortoise, whom he crossly orders to step out of his way. In answer, Tortoise rises onto his hind legs and warns Elephant to treat him with more respect, since Tortoise is just as strong as Elephant. At this, Elephant laughs and attempts to squash Tortoise, but the tortoise's shell protects him, and he challenges Elephant to meet him again the following day.

Leaving Elephant behind, Tortoise goes to the river and challenges Hippopotamus to a test of strength. Amused, the hippopotamus agrees, and Tortoise arranges to meet with him the following morning by the river.

The next morning, Tortoise gives one end of a rope to Hippopotamus and instructs him to wait until he hears a shout; then the contest can begin. While Hippopotamus waits patiently, Tortoise tells the same story to Elephant, who obediently takes the other end of the rope, unaware that Hippopotamus is on the other end. Tortoise quickly scuttles out of view, and his shout prompts the two contestants to start pulling heatedly at their end of the rope. To their surprise, they are not able to pull over their opponent, whom they believe is Tortoise, and neither win, as they are of equal strength. Meanwhile, Tortoise watches with amusement from a nearby tree.
