"Tell Me It's You" is a song composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda for Mufasa: The Lion King. It was released on December 13, 2024, as part of the film's official soundtrack and Deluxe Edition soundtrack.
Conception and development[]
In the 2022 draft of Mufasa: The Lion King, "Tell Me It's You" took place when Sarabi confronted Mufasa on the mountain. However, composer Lin-Manuel Miranda realized that the scene was sufficient on its own and that the song needed to start with Mufasa "doing the work" and voicing his feelings. As a result, Miranda moved the song to take place after their conversation.[2]
An early title for the song was "I Know It's You".[3] It had alternate lyrics in which Mufasa suggested that he knew Taka was watching his romantic interactions with Sarabi.[2]
Release[]
Lin-Manuel Miranda served as the composer and lyricist of "Tell Me It's You". The song was released on December 13, 2024, as part of the original motion picture soundtrack of Mufasa: The Lion King as well as its Deluxe Edition soundtrack. It was performed by Aaron Pierre and Tiffany Boone.[4][5]
Use[]
"Tell Me It's You" is the sixth of seven songs to be heard in Mufasa: The Lion King. It begins immediately after Sarabi confronts Mufasa over his lie that Taka had saved her from the elephant stampede. As the two duet about their feelings for one another, they climb down the side of the mountain. Eventually, they embrace, and the camera pans up to show Taka watching, heartbroken, from a nearby ridge. Immediately after the song ends, Taka sings "Brother Betrayed".[6]
Lyrics[]
Mufasa:
Ever since you appeared
I've been running from something deep inside
And it's worse than I feared
'Cause I look in your eyes, and I can't hide
I push you away
Sarabi:
Don't push me away
Mufasa:
But the feelings come back, just twice as strong
I don't know what to say
Sarabi:
You know just what to say
Mufasa:
But I know that I'm right where I belong
Sarabi:
The way you know just where to be
Mufasa:
I don't know
Sarabi:
The way you move, the way you see
Mufasa:
You see me
Sarabi:
The way you feel when you're with me
Mufasa and Sarabi:
Beside me
Sarabi:
Don't hide from me anymore
Tell me it's you
I know it's you
Mufasa:
What do I say?
Where do I go?
How do I know you feel the same?
Sarabi:
Tell me it's you
I know it's you
Mufasa:
Quiet and low
Letting it go
Letting you know what's in me
Everywhere that I roam
Mufasa and Sarabi:
I remind myself not to overstay
Mufasa:
Every time I find home
Mufasa and Sarabi:
Something happens to take that home away
Mufasa:
But you've seen what I've seen
Sarabi:
I see you
Mufasa and Sarabi:
As you lead with a strength that shines right through
Mufasa:
You move like a queen, a true queen
Mufasa and Sarabi:
Don't let anything take me away from you
Sarabi:
Tell me it's you
I know it's you
Mufasa:
Say it again
Say it again
Tell me I'll always be with you
Sarabi:
Tell me it's you
I know it's you
Mufasa:
Say it again
Say it again
Tell me you're always with me
Sarabi:
The way you know just where to be
Mufasa:
Now, I know
Sarabi:
The way you move, the way you see
Mufasa:
I see you
Sarabi:
The love I feel when you're with me
Mufasa and Sarabi:
Beside me
Beside me
Mufasa:
Say it again
Say it again
Say it again
Tell me the world won't interfere
Sarabi:
Say it again
Say it again
Tell me the words I want to hear
Mufasa and Sarabi:
Say it again
Say it again
Open your eyes
And here we go
I know it's you
I know it's you
