"Stand By Me" is a music video that aired as the third segment of the thirteenth episode of Season 1 of The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa. It was produced and directed by Steve Moore and the song was arranged and produced by Randy Petersen. It premiered on October 28, 1995 on CBS' Saturday morning lineup, alongside "Don't Break the China" and "Can't Take a Yolk".
The music video was later released in theaters as a short film before Tom and Huck in December 1995, making it Disney's shortest theatrical short film in history (with the running time of 3½ minutes). It was released under the title Timon & Pumbaa in Stand By Me.
Release[]
In 1997, Disney released an album titled Jungle Boogie, which consisted of songs from both The Lion King and The Jungle Book franchises. "Stand By Me" was included on this album.[1]
Use[]
"Stand By Me" is a music video featured after "Can't Take a Yolk", the second segment of the thirteenth episode of The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa. It is the third song heard in The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa, as well as the third and final music video from the series. Timon performs the song as he states how happy he will be as long as he has Pumbaa by his side. Every time he sings the song's title, various unfortunate events keep happening to Pumbaa, which Timon doesn't notice. This gets to the point where Pumbaa starts to dislike the song and asks Timon if they could sing another one, to which the meerkat replies that they can as long as he stands by him. Three frogs, who were initially backup vocalists, finish performing the song.
Lyrics[]
Frogs:
Rum dum dum dum
Dum dum dum dum
Dum dum dum dum
Rum dum dum dum
Yum dum dum dum
Dum dum dum dum
Dum dum dum dum
Dum dum dum dum
Timon:
When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
Oh I won't be afraid, no, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
So, Pumbaa, Pumbaa, stand by me
Oh oh oh stand by me
Ooh stand, stand by me, stand by me
If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Or the mountains, they should crumble to the sea
I won't cry
Pumbaa: (spoken)
You won't cry?
Timon:
No, I won't shed a tear
Pumbaa: (spoken)
You won't shed a tear?
Timon:
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
So, Pumbaa, Pumbaa, stand by me
Oh oh won't you stand by me
Ooh stand, stand by me, stand by me
Pumbaa: (spoken)
Eeh, I don't think I like this song!
Instrumental break
Timon:
So, Pumbaa, Pumbaa, stand by me
Oh oh won't you stand by me
Ooh stand, come on, stand by me, stand by me
Pumbaa: (spoken)
Timon?
Timon: (spoken)
Yes?
Pumbaa: (spoken)
Can I sing the next song?
Timon: (spoken)
Sure, as long as you stand by me!
Pumbaa: (spoken)
Fair enough.
Frog:
Whenever you're in trouble won't you stand by me
Oh oh ooh stand by me
I know you need me, stand by me
Oh oh oh oh stand by me
Oooh, heey
Trivia[]
- "Stand By Me" is a cover of the song originally performed by Ben E. King and written by King, Jerry Leiber, and Mike Stoller, inspired by the spiritual "Lord Stand by Me," plus two lines rooted in Psalms 46:2–3. There have been over 400 recorded versions of the song.
- When the series was released on Disney+, the 13th episode featured the short film version of the music video rather than the original version, although the sound mix from the music video version was still intact.[2]
- The music video appeared at the start of the VHS tapes Sweetheart Stories, Mickey Loves Minnie, The Best of Roger Rabbit, and The Big Green, as The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa was promoted on VHS.[3][4][5]
- A toaster resembling the titular character from The Brave Little Toaster film trilogy makes a brief cameo.
