Mufasa's death was a terrible tragedy, but to lose Simba, who had barely begun to live... For me, it is a deep, personal loss. So it is with a heavy heart that I assume the throne. Yet, from out of the ashes of this tragedy, we shall rise to greet the dawning of a new era...in which lion and hyena come together, in a great and glorious future!
Scar to his pride[src]

Scar's coronation is a ceremony in which Scar assumes the title of king of Pride Rock and allows the hyenas entry into the Pride Lands. Though the pride believes it to be a peaceful and rightful succession, they are unaware that Scar had murdered the previous king, his brother Mufasa, and driven the true heir, Simba, from the Pride Lands.

Information

Background

Scar, aided by Shenzi, Banzai and Ed, organizes a covert assassination of Mufasa and Simba. He brings his nephew to the gorge and gives a signal to his allies, who then start a stampede of wildebeest. Mufasa and Zazu are informed about Simba's danger by Scar, and the three run to help the cub. While Mufasa brings his son to safety, Scar hits Zazu unconscious. He then waits at the top of the cliff for Mufasa, who begs for help, and responds by sinking his claws into the king's paws and throwing him to his death. Later, he finds Simba, who is mourning his father, and shows him feigned sympathy. When Simba asks advice from his uncle, Scar suggests he escape forever. Trusting his uncle, Simba runs away, and Scar orders the hyenas to kill him. They manage to run him down a slope, where he escapes into a bramble patch, leaving the hyenas empty-handed. They decide to leave Simba to die in the desert and lie to Scar about the cub's fate.

The coronation

Rafiki mourns the new era

That night, Scar gathers all the lionesses and informs them of the deaths of Mufasa and Simba. As the only surviving heir of the royal family, Scar assumes the throne. Hyenas suddenly emerge from the shadows with wide grins and surround the vicinity. The lionesses and Zazu are struck by the fact that Scar has taken on the hyenas as his allies, but the new king explains that the hyenas are here with his permission, because a new era has arrived in the Pride Lands. He then climbs to the edge of Pride Rock and begins to ascend the promontory.

Watching the invasion from afar, Rafiki sighs sadly. He comes back to his tree and slowly moves his hand across Simba's picture, slightly smearing it. This implies that the young prince is no longer a part of the circle of life.

Trivia

  • Originally, Scar was supposed to bring the hyenas to Pride Rock and appoint them as executive staff years after taking the throne.[1]
  • In a 1992 version of the script, Scar was supposed to bring an unconscious Zazu to the pride, and Sarabi was supposed to sob after hearing the horrible news. The hyenas would not appear immediately after Mufasa's death.[2]
  • In another draft, a reprise of "Be Prepared" was written for the film during Scar's coronation, but it was deemed too inappropriate to put directly after Mufasa's death and therefore was cut.
