You are nothing compared to Mufasa!
―Sarabi to Scar[src]

Sarabi is a female lion. She is the queen of Pride Rock who preceded Nala. She was the mate of Mufasa, with whom she had a son, Simba.

As a young lioness, Sarabi lost her pride to the vicious Outsiders and was forced to go on the run with her loyal scout, Zazu. In an attempt to find remnants of her pride, she began to tail two young lions named Mufasa and Taka, whom she eventually joined up with. Over time, Sarabi developed romantic feelings for Mufasa, which embittered Taka and led him to secretly betray his brother for having "stolen" her affections.

Eventually, the friends reached the mystical paradise of Milele, only for the Outsiders to attack. While Sarabi rallied several nearby lions to their cause, Mufasa battled the leader of the Outsiders, Kiros. After an extended battle, Mufasa and his allies emerged victorious, and Mufasa became the new king of Milele, with Sarabi as his queen.

While serving as Mufasa's queen, Sarabi led the pride's hunting party. When Mufasa and Simba purportedly died in a stampede, she was forced to serve Mufasa's adoptive brother, Scar, instead. Over time, Scar and his hyena allies devastated the Pride Lands by over-hunting, and the lionesses came to resent his rule. In an attempt to win them over, Scar asked Sarabi to be his queen, but she refused.

Later, when a young adult Simba returned to the Pride Lands to reclaim his birthright, Sarabi and the rest of the lionesses supported his right to rule. They fought at his side in the battle of Pride Rock and emerged victorious over the hyenas. After the fight, the pride witnessed Simba's coronation and roared their assent of his reign.

Meeting Mufasa, Taka, and Rafiki[]

I don't need any help.
―Sarabi[src]

One day, Sarabi's pride was all but decimated by the Outsiders, and she only barely escaped alongside a protector her father had chosen for her: Zazu the hornbill.

Sarabi meets Mufasa and Taka.

While searching for remnants of her pride, Sarabi stumbled upon two lion brothers, Mufasa and Taka. She began to tail them, and Mufasa eventually picked up on her scent and confronted her. She confessed that she was looking for her pride, which had been killed off by the Outsiders, then remarked that they should get moving. As she started to depart, Taka intercepted her and introduced himself. He added that he knew what it was like to lose everything and urged her to join up with them, but she insisted that she did not need help.

At that moment, Zazu revealed his presence and told Mufasa and Taka to move along. However, once the brothers had left to hunt, Zazu urged Sarabi to reconsider their offer, and she reluctantly followed them. While hunting together, the group stumbled upon a mandrill named Rafiki, who claimed to be seeking the mystical land of Milele. Sarabi scoffed at the notion that they should follow a "baboon's" dreams, but Rafiki countered that, sometimes, a dream was all one had. He then compared a dream to the "memory of a great king," which shocked and disturbed Sarabi. Eventually, Mufasa convinced the group to follow Rafiki to Milele.[1]

Journey to Milele[]

As the group continued on their way, Taka confessed to Mufasa that he had feelings for Sarabi, and Mufasa suggested that he be a good listener and talk about the flowers from her pride's valley. Heeding his brother's advice, Taka caught up to Sarabi and awkwardly flirted with her. He remarked on the flowers from her valley, and she was touched that he had noticed them.

Shortly afterwards, the group reached a ravine, and Mufasa claimed that the Outsiders were approaching. Though Sarabi doubted him, he urged her to catch their scent herself, and she did, to her own astonishment. Together, the group descended into the ravine, only for the Outsiders to approach. Mufasa suggested that they ask a nearby herd of elephants for help, but Sarabi pointed out that they were lions and that no one would want to work with them. Instead, she heaved a beehive into the midst of the herd, inciting a stampede.

Mufasa and Sarabi develop romantic feelings for one another.

While the others managed to take cover, Sarabi got knocked unconscious, and Mufasa dragged her to safety under a rock. As he stood over her protectively, he repeatedly iterated, "I got you." Once the stampede had cleared and the Outsiders had been thrown off in their pursuit, Rafiki revived Sarabi and mentioned that "he" had saved her. She questioned who specifically had saved her, and Mufasa hastily claimed that it had been Taka. A grateful Sarabi thanked Taka and nuzzled him.

Continuing on, the group began to climb a snowy mountain. Worried that the Outsiders would follow their tracks, Mufasa instructed Zazu to cover their paw prints in order to throw the pride off their scent. Farther up the mountain, Mufasa began to carry Rafiki on his back, during which he remarked, "I got you." This made Sarabi realize that it had been Mufasa, not Taka, who had saved her life.

Mufasa, Sarabi, and Rafiki reach Milele.

With Taka in earshot, Sarabi confronted Mufasa over his lie and deduced that he had not only been the one to save her, but the one to notice the scent of her valley's flowers on her fur. Though Mufasa initially resisted her advances out of loyalty to Taka, he eventually gave in, and the pair confessed their love for one another. Unbeknownst to the two, they were being watched by Taka from afar. Overcome by jealousy, he decided to betray Mufasa to the Outsiders and secretly lead them to Milele.

Eventually, the group reached Milele, and Mufasa and Sarabi played happily in the water while Taka watched resentfully. Before long, the Outsiders approached, and Sarabi rallied a nearby pride of lions to help them fight. Together, Mufasa's allies fought off the Outsiders, while Mufasa defeated Kiros. Afterwards, Mufasa became the new king of Milele, while Sarabi looked on proudly.[1]

Simba's presentation[]

Of course, I meant no disrespect towards His Majesty...or Sarabi. As you know, I have tremendous respect for the queen.
―Scar to Mufasa, after he misses Simba's presentation[src]

Mufasa and Sarabi had a son named Simba, whom they betrothed to Nala. One morning, at Pride Rock, Mufasa and Sarabi spectated the presentation of their newborn son. After the ceremony, Mufasa confronted Scar for having missed the ceremony, and Scar commented drily that he had not meant to offend Sarabi.[2]

Raising Simba[]

Sarabi tells Simba to bring Zazu along as a babysitter.

Seasons passed, and Simba grew into a lively cub. One morning, he excitedly tried to wake up Mufasa, and Sarabi remarked that the cub was awake. However, Mufasa retorted that Simba was her son before sunrise. Shortly afterward, when hyenas were spotted hunting in the Pride Lands, Zazu reported to Mufasa that Sarabi was leading the charge against them.

Later, Simba approached his friend, Nala, who was being bathed by her mother, Sarafina. Sarabi, who was nearby, commented that it was time for Simba's bath, then began to clean him in spite of his struggles. After the bath, Simba asked for permission to go play with Nala, and Sarabi instructed him to go no farther than the water hole and to bring Zazu with him.[2]

Mufasa's death[]

After Mufasa died in a stampede, Scar delivered a eulogy to the grief-stricken pride, during which he erroneously reported that Simba had perished as well. Sarabi grieved alongside the rest of her pride. At the end of his eulogy, Scar invited the hyenas into Pride Rock, and the lionesses reacted with apprehension and disapproval.[2]

Scar's reign[]

Sarabi refuses to be Scar's queen.

As the seasons passed, the Pride Lands fell into disrepair due to the hyenas' over-hunting of the herds. One day, as Nala spectated the hyenas, Sarabi called her to come and sit with the rest of the lionesses. Nala approached and implored Sarabi to lead the pride out of the kingdom, but Sarabi refused out of a sense of duty to the Pride Lands.

Just then, Scar returned from his hunt and requested an audience with Sarabi. Though Nala protested the order, Sarabi claimed that she was not afraid of Scar, then strode toward where the king was feasting on his prey. Once she had approached, Scar asked her to join him and reminded her of how she had chosen Mufasa over him long ago. He then offered her a place at his side and remarked that the other lionesses would not accept him as long as she resisted his reign. Sarabi vehemently refused, and Scar subsequently allowed the hyenas to eat before the lionesses.

One night, Sarabi caught a glimpse of Nala leaving the Pride Lands.[2]

Battle for Pride Rock[]

Sarabi: Scar. You told us you didn't get to the gorge in time.
Scar: That's true.

Sarabi confronts Scar over Mufasa's death.

In Nala's absence, Scar confronted Sarabi again and demanded that she be his queen. This time, she rejected him and asserted that he would never be as good a king as Mufasa. This prompted him to attack her in a rage. Before he could seriously harm her, a full-grown Simba leaped to her defense and ordered Scar to stay away from her. Sarabi immediately recognized her son and embraced him.

Simba proceeded to challenge Scar's right to rule, and the lionesses supported his claim. However, Scar accused Simba of being responsible for Mufasa's death, and Sarabi begged Simba to deny the allegations. Sorrowfully, Simba admitted that it was true, and Scar lambasted him for having killed his own father. However, Scar let slip to Simba that he, in fact, had killed Mufasa, and Simba ordered him to confess before the pride. Though Scar tried to deny Simba's accusations, Sarabi noted that Scar had revealed a very specific memory about how Mufasa had looked before he had died. Realizing Scar's lie, the lionesses attacked. After an extended fight with Scar's hyenas, the pride emerged victorious.[2]

Simba's coronation[]

After the battle, Sarabi embraced Simba and watched him take his place as the king of the Pride Lands.[2]

Physical appearance[]

As an adolescent, Sarabi was sleek and well-built, with a gold-tinted tan coat and yellow eyes.[1] Upon reaching adulthood, Sarabi grew into an exceptionally large lioness, with a solid build, a wide head, a square jaw, and a prominent white chin. She has black lips, rounded ears, a white chest, and a thin dark stripe on her forehead.[2]

Personality and traits[]

We must all stay together and protect the Pride Lands. This is our home. We must never abandon it.
―Sarabi[src]

As an adolescent, Sarabi was somewhat aloof and distrustful. She tended to forge her own path and resisted the opportunity to make allies or rely on others for help. Over time, she came to trust and rely on Mufasa, whom she admired for his courage, strength, and skills.[1]

Sarabi urges her pride to remain steadfast in spite of Scar's tyranny.

As an adult, Sarabi is fearless and commanding, with a strong sense of pride and justice. She is a natural leader and carries herself with dignity, a trait that demands respect from those around her. She is fiercely loyal to her family, as seen when she continued to reject Scar's advances despite Mufasa's death. Even so, she can sometimes be overcome by shock and uncertainty, such as when she did not stand up for Simba in the face of Scar's accusations.

Sarabi is kind and loving, and looks out for those in her care. In times of need, she encourages her pride to remain steadfast, most notably when she told them to remain hopeful for the future despite Scar's poor reign and treatment of his subjects. She is especially fond of Nala and was visibly concerned to see the younger lioness leaving Pride Rock on her own. Above all, Sarabi strives to protect the Pride Lands, even at the cost of her own well-being. She refused to leave the kingdom even in the midst of a famine and charged fearlessly into battle against the hyenas in the defense of her homeland.[2]
