"Safety Smart: In The Water!" is the third episode of Disney's Wild About Safety. It premiered on April 27, 2009.

Official synopsis[]

"Timon and Pumbaa help kids learn that fun in the water starts with safety. Once again armed with their Safety SmartĀ® Checklist, Timon and Pumbaa head out for a day at their favorite watering hole. There, they identify valuable water safety lessons like checking for a lifeguard, reading all posted safety signs and looking before leaping in."[1]

Plot summary[]

Timon told Pumbaa that he wanted to have fun and go swimming. To Timon's annoyance, Pumbaa suggested that they do it the "Safety Smart" way. Pumbaa handed Timon a Safety Smart Checklist for water activities, but Timon mocked him by using the checklist as a hoverboard. He then boasted that he knew everything about water safety, to which Pumbaa asked if he had applied sunscreen. Timon admitted that he had not, then applied it, while Pumbaa explained the importance of avoiding sunburns.

The duo headed to the jungle waterfalls to cool off. Once there, Pumbaa noticed a sign that read "Lifeguard on Duty" and explained the role of lifeguards to Timon. Excited, Timon rushed toward the water but slipped on a puddle near the edge, and Pumbaa warned him that pool edges could be wet and slippery. As Timon prepared to dive into the water, Pumbaa asked how deep it was. Realizing he did not know, Timon stepped back, and Pumbaa explained that diving could be dangerous, especially when the water's depth was unknown. Timon then sang a snippet of "Hakuna Matata".

Pumbaa advised, "Think, don't sink," which Timon mocked by replying, "If it is your motto, shouldn't it be 'Think, don't stink?'" Timon readied to do a cannonball into the pool, but Pumbaa asked if he had checked whether the surrounding area was clear. Timon admitted that he had not, and Pumbaa explained that failing to check one's surroundings could harm others or even oneself. Finally, Timon jumped into the pool to cool off and invited Pumbaa to join, but Pumbaa opted to stay near the edge, calling it a "Safety Smart" rule. Timon joked that Pumbaa needed the edge to avoid sinking. In answer, Pumbaa demonstrated his excellent swimming skills.

As they swam, Timon suspected that Pumbaa was relieving himself in the pool, but Pumbaa denied it, emphasizing the importance of using a bathroom instead. He then taught Timon to swim with the current, not against it, and how to wave for a lifeguard if help was required.

At that moment, clouds appeared in the sky, and Pumbaa explained that they should exit the water if it started to rain, as lightning made a pool dangerous. He also advised that one wear a life jacket rather than rely on floating toys for safety. He and Timon proceeded to sing a song summarizing everything they had learned about water safety ("Safety Smart in the Water"). In the end, they slid down a large natural waterslide and had a blast.
