Rego is a male lion. He is the king who succeeded Mruki. He is the son of Brond and Sheena, and the mate of Nanda.

As Brond's son, Rego was raised as the heir apparent. However, when Mruki overthrew Brond, Rego fled into exile with his father's court jester, Bobo. The two ended up getting chased by hyenas, and Rego was rescued by a pride of all-female lions, after which he became their leader. Eventually, Rego encountered a self-exiled Brond and learned how to fight from him and two of his friends. Afterward, Rego overthrew Mruki and became the new king of the Kalahari.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Rego was born to Brond and Sheena. He had a sister or half-sister. As Brond's son, he was raised as the heir apparent of his pride.[1]

Life in Brond's pride[]

When the pride made a kill, Sheena brought a portion of the meal to Rego, who was playing with a kangaroo rat. She chided her son and told him that playing with his food was cruel.

One day, Mruki used a hunting game to lure Rego away from the pride and into the midst of some hungry hyenas. The scavengers chased Rego, while Mruki watched from a nearby tree. Just in time, Jambo the elephant saved Rego's life.

Shortly afterward, the pride followed the herds north. Along the way, Mruki took the first bite from an antelope that he had killed in defiance of the Laws of Precedence, which caused Brond to exile him.[1]

Exile[]

A year later, the pride encountered a full-grown Mruki, who challenged Brond's kingship. The two fought, and Brond lost, which made Mruki the new king of the pride. Fearing for her son's life, Sheena urged Rego to run away, and the young lion fled alongside Brond's court jester, Bobo. The two faced many difficulties, including the same hyenas who had attacked Rego before. The scavengers managed to chase Rego up a tree, but Bobo fetched a pride of all-female lions to save the young lion's life. After the rescue, Rego joined the pride, became their leader, and fell in love with a lioness named Nanda.

While following the herds, Rego's pride encountered Brond, who had taken shelter with two of his old friends. The three older lions taught Rego how to fight properly, after which the young lion challenged Mruki's kingship. The two battled at a water hole, and Rego won. A defeated Mruki started to limp away across a salt pan, but Rego warned him that he was in danger. However, Mruki ignored Rego's warnings and was subsequently sucked into the mire.[1]

Kingship[]

Rego became the king of the Kalahari. His mate, Nanda, nursed their cubs.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Initially, Rego was lazy and somewhat sadistic, as he enjoyed toying with a helpless kangaroo rat. Additionally, he was naïve and thus vulnerable to Mruki's trappings. However, as an adult, Rego became more competent, authoritative, and powerful. He eventually used his experience to overthrow Mruki and become the new king of the Kalahari.[1]
