Porcupines are a species of animal native to the forest and the Pride Lands.

History[]

Pride Lands flood[]

The porcupine brothers. Though that'd be easier if we had Bunga to help.
Kion, after a flood[src]

When a sudden flood devastated the Pride Lands, the hollow log in which the porcupine brothers lived got destroyed. The Lion Guard came to the brothers' aid and turned their log upright. After crawling back inside, the porcupines began to complain about the cramped space.[1]

Simba's duties[]

...and tenderly kiss baby porcupines, oh-so-gently...
Zazu on Simba's duties[src]

When Simba grew melancholic about his kingly duties, Zazu reminded him about his more enjoyable duties, which included kissing baby porcupines.[2]

Porcupine's advice to Bunga[]

Nothing hurts! Not even bouncing a porcupine on my head.
Bunga[src]

In order to prove his "immunity" to Kion, Bunga bounced a porcupine on his head. Eventually, the porcupine grew tired of the exercise and suggested that Bunga go play in a volcano. When Bunga proceeded to take his advice, however, the porcupine insisted that he had been kidding.[3]

Tale of the Zimwi[]

All this time, the "Zimwi" was just two little porcupines.

Kion discovers that the "Zimwi" is truly the porcupine brothers.

One night, a group of young animals that included the porcupine brothers listened to Rafiki tell a story about the fabled Zimwi monster. When Rafiki mentioned that the Zimwi only emerged during a full moon, and Bunga pointed out that there was a full moon that very night, the brothers reacted with fear. They were similarly spooked when Beshte made strange bellowing noises while practicing for his audition with the Bellow Fellows.

After the story, the frightened porcupine brothers broke off from their friends and huddled together for protection. This led to a series of misunderstandings in which various animals, including the Lion Guard, mistook them for the Zimwi. Eventually, the Lion Guard confronted the brothers, only to discover their true identity. The porcupines explained that they had huddled together for fear of the Zimwi and that the termite mound that they had been standing on had made them appear much taller than they actually were.[4]

Christmas[]

For the Third Way of Christmas, my good friends gave to me three porcupines...

Several porcupines performed "The Twelve Ways of Christmas" for Bunga's Christmas celebration.[5]

Smun's prickle steals Makini's bakora staff[]

Don't even say its name, 'cause every flower's mine, unless you wanna meet the quills of a loyal porcupine.
Mama Binturong on tuliza[src]

Smun's prickle attacks Bunga.

As the Lion Guard passed through the forest en route to the Tree of Life, Smun spied on them and learned that they were searching for tuliza. He reported what he had heard to his matriarch, Mama Binturong, who resolved to hoard every tuliza flower in the forest. Per Mama Binturong's orders, Smun and his prickle stole Makini's bakora staff, then retreated to their hideout in the Stone Forest.

Before long, Bunga stormed the hideout to retrieve Makini's staff, and Mama Binturong ordered her porcupines to stop him. However, Bunga promptly defeated them, stole back Makini's staff, and ruined Mama Binturong's tuliza stash with his stink. Enraged, Mama Binturong swore revenge on Bunga and left the forest, to the sorrow of her porcupine minions.[6]

Battle for the Tree of Life[]

Anga: Looks like Ora and Makucha's friends are here.
Ono: Mama Binturong's porcupines too.
Anga and Ono, during the battle for the Tree of Life[src]

Upon being summoned by Mama Binturong, Smun and his prickle joined Makucha's army in a plot to take over the Tree of Life. Mama Binturong tasked the porcupines with keeping Ullu, the Night Pride's sentry, incapacitated. However, Ullu frightened Smun by turning her head completely backwards, then took advantage of his distraction to escape. Later, the porcupines joined their allies in attacking the Tree of Life, only for Kion to use the Roar of the Elders to sweep them into a tornado and send them far away from the Tree of Life.[7]

Physical characteristics[]

I choose the hard way...or the sharp way. Porcupines!
―Mama Binturong[src]

Porcupines are small, short, stocky animals with large heads and clusters of sharp, striped quills on their backs and tails. They tend to have large, bulbous noses, as well as spiky head tufts. They have furry hides that can be black, brown, gray, or tan. Their eyes can be black or brown.[5]

Sociocultural characteristics[]

Porcupines live in groups called prickles.[6] Due to the sheer volume of their quills, they dislike small spaces and being poked or prodded.[1] However, they may huddle together when scared.[4] Porcupines also make good spies, as seen with Smun's prickle.[6]
