Ostriches are a species of animal native to the Pride Lands. They are preyed upon by hyenas and jackals.

Upon growing into a cub, Simba and his best friend, Nala, attempted to escape their babysitter, Zazu. Several Pride Landers, including some ostriches, helped the cubs get away.[1]

One morning, an ostrich named Mbuni practiced a choral piece for the upcoming Kupatana celebration. Later that day, Reirei's pack stole from some Pride Landers, including ostriches.

That night, many Pride Landers gathered at Mizimu Grove for Kupatana, and Mbuni performed her choral piece alongside Basi, Muhanga, Mtoto's mother, and Twiga. In the midst of the festivities, Reirei's pack attacked, and the Pride Landers worked together to defeat them. Afterwards, the Pride Landers feasted on fallen baobab blossoms.[3]

Janja's attack on Kambuni's friends[]

One day, a young ostrich named Kambuni and her friends were playing "Lion Guard," during which they pretended to be hyenas. This frightened some nearby Pride Landers and attracted the attention of the real Lion Guard. Upon learning that it was simply some little ones playing, Kion warned them about the dangers of pretending to be hyenas, and they vowed to never play in such a way again. They then invited the Guard to play with them, but Kion admitted that they had pressing matters elsewhere.

Later on, Kambuni and her friends were chasing some hyraxes when Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu attacked them. Though most of the young ones managed to get away, Mtoto was targeted for being the slowest. Kambuni and her friends warned the Lion Guard about Mtoto's peril, and they helped rescue him. Afterward, Kion awarded the young animals with muddy Marks of the Guard.[4]

Double Lion Guard rescue[]

―Simba to the Lion Guard[src]

One day, when Simba was temporarily in charge of the Lion Guard, he reported that a mudslide was heading straight for some ostrich nests. Working together, the Guard and Simba saved the eggs, and Mbuni thanked them, adding that it was an honor for the king himself to have saved their eggs. Later, Swala's herd stampeded toward the ostrich nests. While Fuli calmed the ostriches, Ono stopped Swala's herd from stampeding.[5]

Dust devil[]

The dust devil caught us in this gully. At least it was a gully...until all the sand blew in.
―Mbuni[src]

One day, a dust devil blew sand into a gully, trapping several ostriches up to their necks. Having overheard their wails, the Lion Guard approached and set to work digging them free. In the midst of the rescue operation, Goigoi approached, covered in berry stripes, but Beshte chased him off. With the danger abated, the Lion Guard finished freeing the ostriches, and they thanked the team for their help.[6]

Kovu's exile[]

When Simba exiled Kovu from the Pride Lands, some ostriches helped drive him from the kingdom.[2]

Kovu and Kiara's wedding[]

Ostriches attended the wedding of Kovu and Kiara at Pride Rock.[2]

Physical characteristics[]

Ostriches are fairly large and tall birds. Their main feathers can be black, brown, or pink, while their legs, necks, and wing tips are either gray, pink, or white.[1][2][5] Their eyes can be black,[2] blue, or brown.[5]

Sociocultural characteristics[]

Ostriches live in the Pride Lands. They live in flocks and lay multiple eggs, which they keep in nests.[5] They are preyed upon by hyenas[4] and jackals.[3]
