Taka is the future king. We must protect the bloodline.

Obasi's pride was a group of lions led by Obasi. They resided in the Valley of Kings.

Initially, Obasi's pride was led by King Obasi, with his son, Prince Taka, set to inherit the throne from him. One day, a stray lion cub named Mufasa drifted into the pride's territory, and Taka convinced his mother, Eshe, to bring him before their pride. Though Obasi was loath to accept an outsider, he reluctantly allowed Mufasa into his pride's fold after the cub won an initiation race against Taka.

Over the seasons, Mufasa learned to hunt with the females of the pride, while Taka was raised with the more sedate males. When the two were young adults, a hostile pride of lions known as the Outsiders attacked Eshe and Mufasa. Afraid for his bloodline, Obasi sent Mufasa and Taka away to start a new pride. Meanwhile, the rest of the pride remained in the Valley of Kings, where they were attacked and killed by the Outsiders.

History[]

Mufasa's induction[]

We do not associate with outsiders.
―Obasi[src]

When Prince Taka found a fellow lion cub named Mufasa adrift in a river, he saved him from two young crocodiles. His mother, Eshe, warned him that Obasi would never accept a stray, but she eventually caved to her pity and allowed Mufasa to return to the pride with her and Taka.

Obasi's pride meets Mufasa.

Upon seeing Mufasa, Obasi declared that, whenever they saw an outsider, they ate it. He told Mufasa that his name meant "king," then followed up that it was Obasi who was the true king. Though he warned Mufasa to run away, the cub bragged that he was the fastest cub who had ever lived. Seeing this statement as a challenge, Obasi dared him to race Prince Taka, under the condition that he would be eaten if he lost. Eshe, however, reminded Obasi that, should Mufasa win, he would live and be allowed to stay with her. Reluctantly, Obasi agreed to her terms.

To Obasi's disapproval, Taka allowed Mufasa to win the race. Furious, Obasi ordered Mufasa to live with the females of the pride. He then asked Taka how he could lose to a stray. Despite his father's attitude toward Mufasa, Taka immediately warmed to him and came to consider him a brother.[1]

Mufasa and Taka's prank[]

You want to be with the females? You belong with the males.
―Obasi to Taka[src]

Seasons later, when Mufasa and Taka were adolescents, they pranked the males of the pride by pretending there was a nearby elephant stampede. Terrified, the males fled into the Shade Tree, while Obasi cowered at its base. Upon realizing that it had been a trick, Chigaru declared that Obasi's sons were nothing but trouble, but Obasi clarified that Mufasa was not his son. He then sent Mufasa away to be with the females.

In Mufasa's absence, Taka expressed a desire to hunt alongside his mother and adoptive brother. Obasi told Taka that his place was with the males and claimed that Mufasa would betray him someday, as that was what strays did. He then flopped down in the shade and told Taka to study his every move so that he could be a good king one day.

Meanwhile, Eshe took Mufasa into the grasslands and asked him what he could hear and feel. After listening and smelling the air, he explained that there was a herd of antelope a half-day away from them. Eshe questioned how he knew this, and he replied that their footfalls were heavy and slow, and that the wind was moving up their horns rather than across them. Sniffing the air again, he commented that he sometimes detected a hint of home on the breeze, and Eshe offered to help him search downriver for his parents. He, however, dismissed the idea and claimed that their training sessions were a waste of time. Though she argued that no other male lion had his skills, he pointed out that Obasi would never accept him and that it was better to have no responsibilities.[1]

Slaughtered by the Outsiders[]

There will be one ruler, one Lion King.

Mufasa reports on the Outsiders to the rest of Obasi's pride.

Shortly after their conversation, Eshe and Mufasa began to stalk a herd of antelope, with Taka secretly tailing them. Suddenly, two white lions attacked, and Mufasa leaped to Eshe's defense, while Taka fled. Over the course of the fight, Mufasa knocked one of the white lions onto the sharp point of a log, killing him, and the other ran away.

Together, Eshe and Mufasa returned to the Shade Tree, where they reported what they had seen, and Eshe declared that Mufasa had saved her life. Obasi approached Mufasa and told him that he owed the young lion a great debt. Instead of accepting Obasi's praise, Mufasa warned his pride that the remainder of the white lions were less than a day away, and Obasi sent Chigaru to scout the nearby area and verify Mufasa's claims. Though Taka attempted to apologize to his father, Obasi merely dismissed him and walked away. That night, Obasi urged Taka to lie that he had been brave during the attack, for deceit was the tool of a great king.

The Outsiders attack Obasi's pride.

The next morning, Chigaru reported that the pride of white lions, known as the "Outsiders," were coming for them and had twice their numbers. In an effort to preserve his bloodline, Obasi sent Taka away to start a new life. He likewise tasked Mufasa with accompanying Taka and pledging his loyalty to him. Before the brothers departed the pride, Eshe encouraged Mufasa to seek the fabled paradise of Milele and told Taka that his time of courage would come. Together, the two young lions fled their pride.

Shortly after Mufasa and Taka left, the Outsiders confronted Obasi's pride. Obasi told their leader, Kiros, that he had no reason to challenge him, to which Kiros revealed that he had slaughtered every pride in the Valley of Kings, save Obasi's, as he intended to be the sole Lion King. The Outsiders then advanced on Obasi's pride and slaughtered them all.[1]
