Zazu...why am I not loved?
―Scar to Zazu

Nala's exile is an event that takes place during Scar's reign. When Nala rejects Scar's offer to become his queen, he exiles her from the Pride Lands. This scene was cut from the finalized version of The Lion King.

Information[]

Background[]

Scar: Mufasa, Mufasa. I'm sick to death of him. What did he have that I don't have?
Zazu: Nothing. You lack nothing at all. Except a few...minor things. Adoring subjects, respect of your species, a loving family, a devoted queen.
Scar and Zazu

Scar asks Zazu why he is not loved by his subjects, and Zazu explains that it is because the Pride Lands have started to deteriorate. Scar claims that his own feelings are more important, but Zazu asserts that their homeland is becoming a desert. Scar begins to enumerate his own qualities as likability, wit, and good looks. Zazu tries to point out the problem of allowing the hyenas to hunt in the Pride Lands, but Scar ignores him.

Scar on his throne

When Scar asks himself what he lacks in order to gain the love of his subjects, Zazu urges him to do something before the Pride Lands are destroyed. He then mutters that it would have been better if Mufasa were still alive, but Scar overhears him and strikes him. Scar begins to nervously paces left and right in the cave, wondering what it was Mufasa had that he did not. Zazu names a few things, one of which is a queen. Scar immediately realizes that a queen is what he needs and claims that he can gain immortality through his heirs.

The exile[]

Ah, so that's the game, eh? Mutiny? Insurrection? Fine. Have it your way. I don't require your respect...only your obedience.
Scar to the pride

Nala appears at the entrance to Scar's den, showing concern for the state of the Pride Lands. Scar realizes that Nala can be his queen and orders Zazu to leave the den. Zazu proposes to remain, but Scar forces him to leave. With Zazu gone, Scar tells Nala to come closer, and Nala asserts that something must be done about the Pride Lands. Scar begins to flirt with her, ignoring her complaints ("The Madness of King Scar"). He forbids her to leave the cave and corners her against the wall, causing her to strike him in the face and escape. Scar comments that she has no choice, as he always gets what he wants.

The hyenas arrive to support Scar's reign

When Scar leaves the cave, he sees the lionesses and Zazu gathered around Nala. Scar calls them as witnesses and chooses Nala as his queen, but she refuses him. Unwilling to tolerate insubordination, Scar says that she will be expelled from the Pride Lands if she refuses the title. Nala, confused by such injustice, asserts that he cannot banish her, but Scar coldly orders the other lionesses to take Nala away. Sarabi tries to reason with Scar, but he remains adamant. When he again orders the lionesses to take Nala away, they create a dense circle around Nala to protect her. Scar perceives their actions as rebellion and says that he does not require their respect, just their obedience.

Just then, the hyenas appear. The lionesses ready themselves for a fight, but more hyenas emerge and surround the lionesses ("Be Prepared (reprise)"). Scar announces that he will no longer tolerate their opposition, and a hyena agrees with him. In the process, the hyena nearly reveals the true cause of Mufasa's death, but Shenzi forces him to be silent. The hyenas then attack Nala, and she leaves Pride Rock.
