Who are you calling a hippo? I'm a rhino, you baboon!
―Mbeya to the baboon leader[src]

Mbeya is a male rhinoceros. He is the leader of a crash of rhinoceroses in the Pride Lands.

During the Savannah Summit, the Lion Guard find Mbeya, who is furious at Zazu for calling him clumsy. However, the baboon leader clarifies that he called Mbeya clumsy. After Zazu is liberated, Mbeya and the baboon leader begin to bicker. However, Beshte calms the three down. When Kion lies to the leaders attending the summit, telling them Makuu finished his journey in the Circle of Life, the rhinoceros soon reformed his feelings toward Makuu.

When the resurrected spirit of Scar began sending his army to wage war on the Pride Lands, Mbeya joined his fellow Pride Landers in fighting them off and eventually defeating them altogether with an invasion of the Outlands.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Lion Guard waited on the edge of the water. Eventually, the friends grew impatient and insisted that Beshte wrap up his conversation. Realizing that he had forgotten to ask about Flat Ridge Rock, Beshte went back and asked Mbeya for directions. The old rhinoceros pointed Beshte in the right direction.[2]

Mbeya argues with the baboon leader.

Mbeya was invited by Simba to participate in the Savannah Summit. He proceeded to Mizimu Grove for the event along with all the other invited animal leaders.

Later, Mbeya sat on Zazu, which prompted the hornbill to call for help. The Lion Guard followed the noise to where Rafiki was attempting to paint a portrait of Mbeya, who was sitting on Zazu, and the baboon leader. The Lion Guard demanded an explanation, and Mbeya furiously explained that Zazu had called him "clumsy." The baboon leader clarified that it had been him who had called Mbeya clumsy, then accused Mbeya of having bumped into him. Zazu yelled for Mbeya to get off him, and the rhinoceros complied, to Zazu's relief. The baboon leader and Mbeya started to bicker again, but Beshte stepped in-between them and encouraged them to get along with one another. The three then apologized to each other.

That evening, Mbeya and the other leaders looked on as Makuu proclaimed his innocence, claiming that he had only wished to help his float by coming to the Summit. Afterward, negotiations were reengaged.[1]

Mbeya expresses gratitude to Beshte for rescuing him.

In the midst of a tsetse fly infestation, the Lion Guard found Mbeya upside-down in a dry ditch. Beshte freed Mbeya, who lamented having rolled into the dry steambed to escape the tsetse flies. The team then escorted him to a watering hole.

Later, the Lion Guard found themselves plagued by tsetse flies. The flies left just as Thurston and his herd appeared, and Ono realized that the flies disliked the zebras' stripes. This gave Kion an idea. Under Kion's orders, the Lion Guard decided to escort Mbeya and the zebras to a new watering hole.[6]

Mbeya agrees to join the Pride Lander army.

When the spirit of Scar secretly returned to wage war against the Pride Lands, Kion and the Guard passed through the Lair of the Lion Guard to view cave paintings of the Pride Lands' past, including a painting of Mbeya during the Savannah Summit.[9]

The Lion Guard concluded that the Pride Landers needed to unite against the threat of the Outlanders. They gathered Bupu's herd, Laini's group, Ma Tembo's herd, and Mbeya's crash. At first, the Pride Landers were tense, but Kion worked to defuse the tension. He instructed the animals to race toward Bunga. However, the event soon got out of hand, for the animals tripped over the galagos and ended up in a heap. Kion then got the idea to call Makuu the crocodile for help. Makuu begrudgingly agreed to help, but his training was too rigorous and ruthless for the other Pride Landers to master.

Shortly after Makuu quit the training sessions, the Army of Scar besieged his float. Ono witnessed the battle and reported his findings to Kion. Together, the Lion Guard and their Pride Lander allies stormed the watering hole and fought off the Army of Scar. After the fight, Makuu thanked Mbeya and his crash for the help and vowed to do the same for them should the need ever arise.[10]

Dhahabu's visit

Mbeya traveled to Pride Rock to train for the upcoming battle with Scar and his army. That night, Mbeya witnessed Scar's spirit appearing in the flames of Pride Rock.

The next morning, Mbeya and his crash joined the other Pride Landers in invading the Outlands. During the battle, Cheezi and Chungu challenged Mbeya and his crash, which confused them. Janja then reminded the two that they were on the Pride Landers' side. The battle continued, and the Pride Landers achieved victory.[12]

Lion Guard's trip to the Tree of Life

Mbeya and his crash arrived at Pride Rock to say farewell to the Lion Guard, who were departing for the Tree of Life. Mwenzi got the rhinoceroses' attention as the Guard passed them by.[12]

Battle of the Lion Guards

When Anga returned to the Pride Lands, she took a flight around the kingdom, during which she flew past Mbeya. Later, Mbeya watched the Battle of the Lion Guards, including Beshte's, Fuli's, and Anga's challenges. He witnessed the mashindano between Kion and Vitani, and reacted with awe when Kion used the Roar of the Elders to lift Pride Rock.[13]

Physical appearance

Mbeya is a large rhinoceros. He has blue-gray skin, with a dark underbelly and spots on his face and hide. He has two gray horns on his snout as well as small black eyes.[2]
