Wooing Ways

There are many dangers in this world, lion cubs, but few more dangerous than a jealous cat.

Leopard and Little Cat is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis[]

Cat and Leopard are great friends, but this all changes when they each have a litter of kittens. While Cat's three kittens are all very good and kind to their mother, Leopard's kitten is lazy and always requires his mother to do everything for him. Exhausted by taking care of her kitten, Leopard begs Cat to send her one of her kittens to help her out, and Cat agrees, sending her good-tempered son to help out Leopard.

That night, Leopard tells Cat's son, Little Cat, to sleep on a bare patch of earth, but Little Cat chooses to sleep in a tree instead, leaving his blanket on the ground. Not long after going to bed, Little Cat hears growls from below and looks down to see Leopard tearing at his blanket, but when questioned by Little Cat, she claims that she had just been dreaming. The next night, Little Cat wraps Leopard's kitten in his blanket, and Leopard swallows her own son whole. With no more charge to look after, Little Cat returns home, and he and his siblings resolve to stay in their tree to avoid Leopard's wrath, using a rope to get in and out.

However, Leopard soon discovers their secret signal, and the kittens let her up into the tree, where Little Cat stalls by telling her to wait on a branch while he fetches her some food. Heeding Little Cat's advice, Leopard steps onto the indicated branch, but it proves to be weak and dead, and Leopard plummets to the earth, away from the kittens. Having been defeated by Cat's clever children, Leopard hangs her head and walks away, ashamed of having been so jealous.
