In the soundtracks
"King of Pride Rock (Score)" was released on May 31, 1994, as part of the soundtrack for The Lion King. It is one of four scores from the soundtrack, in addition to "This Land (Score)", "...To Die For (Score)", and "Under the Stars (Score)".
The complete score was unofficially released shortly after the film's soundtrack. "King of Pride Rock (Score)" can be heard in its entirety as a track titled "Simba and Nala Move In/Finale".
On June 24, 2014, The Legacy Collection: The Lion King was released, with "King of Pride Rock (Score)" once more heard in its entirety as a track titled "The Rightful King".
"King of Pride Rock (Score)" was reimagined for the 2019 remake of The Lion King. It is titled "Battle for Pride Rock" on the film's soundtrack.
The stage musical uses many sections of score from "King of Pride Rock (Score)". However, instead of being one cue, the score is split into two parts, "Finale - Part 1" and "Finale - Part 2". The original cast recording includes a rendition of the latter section of the score, called "King of Pride Rock / Circle of Life (Reprise)". The complete album was released in 1997.
In the film
The first notes of "King of Pride Rock (Score)" can be heard after Scar calls Sarabi to Pride Rock. The track plays through their heated confrontation on the peak and carries into Simba's revelation to the pride that he is still alive. Parts of Scar's verbal confrontation with Simba can be heard before the track skips to the start of the rainstorm that signifies the end of the final battle. At this point, the track documents Simba's triumphant ascension up Pride Rock and ends on the final reprise of "Circle of Life" heard at the conclusion of the film.
