Kiara's first hunt was a coming-of-age ritual in which Kiara attempted to hunt prey in the Pride Lands on her own. The Outsiders manipulated the event in order to help Kovu infiltrate the pride, as part of Zira's plan to kill Simba and instate Kovu as king.

Kiara's first hunt had been planned for some time before its occurrence. When Kiara was still a cub, Nala would take her out to practice certain aspects of the hunt, such as tracking.[1]
Before the Lion Guard departed the Pride Lands for the Tree of Life, Nala expressed hope that Kion would return in time to witness the hunt.[2]
The hunt[]

At Pride Rock, the pride gathered to offer Kiara support before she departed for her hunt. After receiving encouragement from Nala, Kiara turned to Simba and asked him to let her hunt on her own. Simba reluctantly agreed, but after Kiara left, he instructed Timon and Pumbaa to shadow her. In the savanna, Kiara located a herd of antelope, but she accidentally made a noise that frightened them into fleeing. Frustrated, she gave chase after them.
Meanwhile, Nuka and Vitani ignited clusters of sticks in the Elephant Graveyard, then made off for the Pride Lands.
Elsewhere, Timon and Pumbaa tracked Kiara as she pursued the herd, though she continued to frighten them due to her lack of stealth. The herd thundered right towards Timon and Pumbaa, who, when the stampede cleared, found themselves facing a furious Kiara. Realizing that the pair had been sent by her father to follow her, Kiara resolved to hunt outside of the Pride Lands. Timon and Pumbaa attempted to reason with her, but she fled, and they quickly lost her.[3]
The fire[]

Nuka and Vitani, watching Kiara from a distance, proceeded to set fire to the plains with their flaming sticks. Kiara soon spotted the smoke and, horrified, took off in the opposite direction. As the fire raged, Zira sent Kovu into the Pride Lands to enact the next part of the plan.
Back at Pride Rock, Zazu tried to calm a pacing Simba. Just then, the king caught sight of the fire in the distance. Terrified, he ordered Zazu to find Kiara while he rallied the pride.
Meanwhile, Kiara barely managed to keep ahead of the flames. Penned in on all sides, she made a desperate leap onto a rocky ledge, where she passed out. Kovu emerged from the smoke and, taking Kiara on his back, carried her through the fire. They rolled down a hill and plunged into a lake. Zazu spotted Kovu dragging Kiara to shore and wheeled around to inform Simba of their whereabouts.
On land, Kiara regained consciousness. When Kovu informed her that she was back in the Pride Lands, she was furious. She tried to sidestep him to get away, but he repeatedly blocked her path. When he eventually demanded to know what she was doing, his tone prompted her to realize who he was.
Just then, Simba arrived in a panic. Kiara tried to explain herself, but accidentally let slip Kovu's name in the process. Further outraged, Simba started to advance on the young lion, but was stopped by Rafiki, who pointedly questioned Kovu's audacity in saving Kiara's life. When Simba demanded to know why Kovu had done this, the young lion replied that he wished to join the pride. Simba was suspicious of this request, but Zazu remarked that according to the law, Kovu's good deed ought to be repaid. Upon consideration, Simba reluctantly agreed to receive Kovu into the pride, though he decreed that judgment on the young lion's character would be reserved for the time being.[3]
