Pride Landers, unite!
―Johari[src]

Johari is a male elephant. He is a member of Ma Tembo's herd.

When the Army of Scar attacked Kilio Valley, Johari and his herd were left without a home. Though they tried to move in with several different animal groups, they were continually rejected due to their disruptive behavior. Eventually, Ma Tembo deduced that the elephants must leave the Pride Lands, as they were an unwanted burden on the other Pride Landers. However, after the herd helped save the galagos from a fire, Laini invited them to move into Ndefu Grove with her and her fellows.

Later, the resurrected spirit of Scar began waging war on the Pride Landers, and Johari helped protect his homeland. He joined his fellow Pride Landers in an invasion of the Outlands, from which they emerged victorious.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Johari lived in the Pride Lands. He was a member of Ma Tembo's herd.[1]

Christmas[]

Merry Christmas!

Johari participates in the "The Twelve Ways of Christmas" performance.

One night, Johari attended Bunga's Christmas rehearsal. Things went well until the next morning, when everyone was leaning toward abandoning the project. Before the animals could depart, Bunga desperately explained that the performance was important to both himself and Timon. This caused the Pride Landers to change their minds.

Later that day, Johari partook in the "The Twelve Ways of Christmas" performance. After the performance, Timon lamented that Dandy Claws would never come, only for Pumbaa to suddenly appear in costume. Pumbaa apologized for his lack of gifts, but Timon pointed out that their family and friends were the gifts. The Lion Guard decided to make Christmas an annual holiday in the Pride Lands, and the gathered Pride Landers yelled, "Merry Christmas!" in unison.[2]

New water source[]

Johari flees a hyena attack.

Johari followed his herd leader, Ma Tembo, as she searched for water. In the midst of the search, he and his herd were attacked by Janja's clan, but the hyenas were soon driven off by the Lion Guard. Before long, Janja's clan attacked again, but this time, they chased the baboon leader's troop. The Lion Guard arrived and led Johari into a rocky gorge, where Kion used the Roar of the Elders to blast the hyenas back into the Outlands.

Later, Johari followed Ma Tembo in the hopes that she would find a new water source. Makini managed to calm everyone down, and, in the silence, Ma Tembo located some water. Along with the other Pride Landers, Johari drank happily from the new water source.[1]

Ukumbusho Tradition[]

Huh?
―Johari, when Mtoto sprays his forehead[src]

Johari stampedes through Sehemu Pass in an attempt to escape a horde of bees.

As a member of Ma Tembo's herd, Johari was tasked with participating in the Ukumbusho Tradition, a ceremony that honored the historical peace treaty between the elephants and lions of the Pride Lands. In the midst of the Pride Landers' preparations for the event, Makini arrived to paint the elephants, and Johari waited patiently to be painted.

During the Ukumbusho ceremony, the elephants' paint attracted a swarm of bees that chased the herd across the Pride Lands. Eventually, Johari and his fellow herd member, Zito, got stuck in Sehemu Pass, where Ma Tembo and Mtoto sprayed off their forehead paint, which effectively warded off the bees. With the swarm gone, the elephants returned to Mizimu Grove and rejoined the Ukumbusho Tradition, this time without the ceremonial sunburst on their foreheads.[3]

Fire at Kilio Valley[]

At Kilio Valley, the Lion Guard struggled to put out a widespread brush fire. At first, the team believed the fire to have been put out for good, but then embers began falling from the sky and reignited the valley. In response to this new danger, the Lion Guard spread out and accepted help from several of Ma Tembo's herd members. While Johari assisted Beshte in using dust to spray out the flames, Ma Tembo led the rest of the herd out of the valley. However, she was cornered in the midst of the fire by Janja, Kiburi, Reirei, and their respective followers. Despite the elephants' best efforts, the fire devastated the valley, and they were forced to abandon their home.

Kion recruits Johari, Zigo, and Zito to help him fight the fire in Kilio Valley.

After the incident, Kion led the elephants to the galagos, then the giraffes, but both groups turned the herd away due to their disruptive behavior. Frustrated, Kion ordered Bupu to accept the elephants until the Lion Guard could come up with another solution. However, it was not long before the Lion Guard discovered that Ma Tembo and her herd had been forcibly ousted by Bupu. Kion approached the herd and assured Ma Tembo that he would find them a new home, but Ma Tembo insisted that they must leave the Pride Lands, as no one else wanted them.

Just before the elephants could leave the kingdom for good, Kion approached them for help in putting out a fire at Ndefu Grove. Ma Tembo accepted, and the herd worked together to put out the fire. Afterward, Laini offered the elephants a place with her galagos at Ndefu Grove, and Ma Tembo happily accepted her offer.[4]

Fight at Makuu's watering hole[]

Johari stands fast against the Army of Scar.

The Lion Guard concluded that the Pride Landers must unite against the threat of the Outlanders. They gathered Bupu's herd, Laini's group, Ma Tembo's herd, and Mbeya's crash. At first, the Pride Landers were tense, but Kion worked to defuse the tension. He instructed the animals to race toward Bunga. However, the event soon got out of hand, for the animals tripped over the galagos and ended up in a heap. Kion then got the idea to call Makuu the crocodile for help. Makuu begrudgingly agreed to help, but his training was too rigorous and ruthless for the other Pride Landers to master.

The Army of Scar besieged Makuu's float, with Kiburi targeting Makuu. Ono witnessed the battle and reported his findings to Kion. Together, the Lion Guard and their Pride Lander allies stormed the watering hole and fought off the Army of Scar. After the fight, Makuu thanked Johari and his herd for help and vowed to do the same for them should the need ever arise.[5]

Dhahabu's visit[]

Johari was present when Dhahabu arrived at Pride Rock.[6]

Scar's threat[]

At Mizimu Grove, Rafiki and Simba announced Makini's mpando mpaya, and Timon and Pumbaa performed a song for the crowd, which included Johari and his herd. In the midst of the celebration, the Army of Scar attacked, and the Pride Landers rose up to defend themselves. The battle paused when Scar appeared in the flames and threatened to overtake the entirety of the Pride Lands. Frightened by Scar's unexpected appearance, the remaining Pride Landers, including Johari and his herd, fled Mizimu Grove.

Johari and his herd debate whether they should leave the Pride Lands.

Kion used the Roar of the Elders to defeat the Outlanders, while Simba deliberated what to do with Ma Tembo. Simba then approached the Pride Landers and admitted that he had had knowledge of Scar's return for some time. Ma Tembo noted that she understood why he had kept it a secret. The herds deliberated whether they should leave the Pride Lands, and Simba told them to inform him of their decision the following morning at Pride Rock.

At Pride Rock, Kion implored Ma Tembo and her herd to follow him to Mizimu Grove before they decided to leave the kingdom. The herds followed Kion to Pride Rock, where Makini's baobab tree seed had survived the fire. This inspired the Pride Landers to remain in the kingdom and work together to defeat Scar.[7]

Battle for the Pride Lands[]

Pride Landers, unite!
―Johari[src]

Johari arrived at Pride Rock to train for the assault on the Outlands. Later, he charged into battle alongside his herd and emerged victorious with the rest of the Pride Landers. After the fight, Johari gathered at Pride Rock with other Pride Landers to bid farewell to the Lion Guard.[8]

Battle of the Lion Guards[]

When Beshte returned from the Tree of Life, Johari and other Pride Landers welcomed him back to Big Springs. Later, Johari spectated the Battle of the Lion Guards, including Beshte's, Fuli's, and Anga's challenges. He witnessed the mashindano between Kion and Vitani, and reacted with awe when Kion used the Roar of the Elders to lift Pride Rock.[9]

Physical appearance[]

Johari is a moderately sized elephant. He has pale gray skin, with a pale underbelly, pink inner ears, spots on his left shoulder, and white tusks. His eyes are green.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Johari is brave and loyal, as he frequently defended his fellow Pride Landers from Scar's attacks.[5][8]
