Everyone struggled to make it here, and they almost didn't. If it hadn't been for you and Simba... From now on, the troop comes first.
Jelani to Rafiki[src]

Jelani's troop is a group of mandrills led by Jelani.

Under the reign of Jelani, Grass Walls fell into disrepair. Eventually, word reached Rafiki in the Pride Lands that his former troop was in danger, and he traveled to Grass Walls to help them. Though Rafiki implored Jelani to lead his people elsewhere, he refused, and so, Rafiki took charge of the group. Under Rafiki's command, the troop set out on a long and exhausting journey until they reached a jungle oasis. There, they settled down, and Jelani resolved to be a better leader.

History[]

Khalfani's reign[]

Initially, Jelani's troop was led by Khalfani. However, when he got killed by a leopard, Jelani became the troop's new leader, as he was the strongest mandrill. Under his reign, Grass Walls suffered, but he refused to lead his people elsewhere.[1]

Rafiki confronts Jelani.

Eventually, word reached Rafiki in the Pride Lands that his homeland was in danger. Along with Simba, he set out to save his former troop.

Upon arriving in Grass Walls, Rafiki and Simba found that it had deteriorated into a wasteland. As Rafiki made his way through the kingdom with Simba, he was greeted by old friends. They directed him to their leader, Jelani, who was sitting lazily beneath a dead tree. Rafiki confronted Jelani and demanded that he take care of his subjects. When Jelani continually refused, Rafiki took charge of the troop, using Simba's strength to enforce his will, and announced that they would be leaving Grass Walls in search of better territory.

Jelani's troop finds a new home.

The next morning, Rafiki led the troop away from Grass Walls. During the journey, a leopard attacked Dalila and stole her son, Mosi. Simba, thinking of his own son, chased the leopard down and saved the youngster. Though the troop was delighted by Mosi's rescue, they complained about their hunger and thirst, and Simba worried that they would not be able to continue for much longer.

As the journey continued, Rafiki's cousin Karibu collapsed from exhaustion and insisted that the troop go on without her. To the troop's surprise, Jelani lifted Karibu onto his back. The troop carried on until they reached a lush jungle, where they could at last drink and rest.

The next morning, Jelani announced to Rafiki that he had found a clearing where the troop could settle down. Rafiki commented that Jelani had changed, and he explained that he had realized how detrimental his selfish leadership had been. With the troop in safe hands, Rafiki and Simba departed.[1]
