I Always Wanted A Brother

I have one more secret, Mufasa: I always wanted a brother!
Taka, before he lets Mufasa win their race[src]

"I Always Wanted A Brother" is a song composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda for Mufasa: The Lion King. It was released on December 13, 2024, as part of the film's official soundtrack and Deluxe Edition soundtrack.

Conception and development[]

"I Always Wanted A Brother" was the first song that Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote for Mufasa: The Lion King.[1] Though the song was initially titled "Brother Trouble", Miranda decided to rename it after hearing Taka's line of dialogue to Mufasa: "I have one more secret, Mufasa: I always wanted a brother!"[2] He based the song off the relationship between his own young sons.[3]

Release[]

Lin-Manuel Miranda served as the composer and lyricist of "I Always Wanted A Brother". The song was released on December 13, 2024, as part of the original motion picture soundtrack of Mufasa: The Lion King as well as its Deluxe Edition soundtrack. Braelyn Rankins and Theo Somolu performed young Mufasa's and young Taka's parts, while Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. performed adolescent Mufasa's and adolescent Taka's parts.[4][5]

Use[]

"I Always Wanted A Brother" is the third of seven songs to appear in Mufasa: The Lion King. It takes place directly after Mufasa wins an initiation race against Taka, and Obasi reluctantly allows him to join his pride. As the song begins, Mufasa and Taka romp through the Valley of Kings, bonding as brothers, despite some opposition from the pride and Mufasa's lingering grief over his lost parents. Toward the end of the song, there is a time-skip in which Mufasa and Taka age into adolescents. Afterwards, the song ends.[6]

Lyrics[]

Taka:
When I am king
No other animal will break my stride
Break my stride
And my brother

Mufasa:
My brother

Taka:
When I'm king
You'll always take my side

Mufasa:
Ha!
Yeah, right

Taka:
That's right
When I am king

Mufasa:
When you are king

Taka:
No other animal will break our pride
Break our pride
And my brother

Mufasa:
My brother

Taka:
Our prey may run away
But they can't hide

Mufasa:
Watch your hide

Taka:
Let's go
Let's go

Mufasa and Taka:
Let's go!

Choir:
Hey
Did your mama say
You could be up this late?

Taka:
Okay
She didn't say
Either way

Mufasa and Taka:
Hide away
Let's go!

Choir:
Hey
Did your father say
You could be out this far?

Taka:
Okay
We're on our way

Mufasa and Taka:
On our way
Run away
Let's go!

Choir:
Hey
Did your mama say
You could be up this late?

Taka:
You're very sharp

Mufasa and Taka:
Yes, you are
Yes, you are
Let's go!

Choir:
Hey
Did your father say
You could be out this far?

Taka:
Make a wish on the brightest star
And I say

I always wanted a brother
I always wanted a brother
I always wanted a brother
Just like you

Mufasa and Taka:
And I always wanted a brother
I always wanted a brother
I always wanted a brother
Just like you

Mufasa:
See that tree?
Those birds are watching the world unfold

Taka:
The world unfold
Oh, brother

Mufasa:
My brother

Taka:
When I'm king
They will do as they're told

Mufasa:
You may look down on them
But they are free

Taka:
You can't catch me

Mufasa:
And where they go
Cannot be controlled

Taka:
No one looks down on me

Mufasa:
They look down on us, brother

Taka:
Ha!

Mufasa:
Some things you chase
But you cannot hold

Taka:
Okay
It's getting old
Let's go

Mufasa and Taka:
Let's go!

Choir:
Hey
Did your mama say
That you could learn this way?

Mufasa:
I've got to

Taka:
Find a way

Mufasa:
Find our prey

Taka:
Fine, I'll wait

Mufasa and Taka:
Let's go!

Choir:
Hey

Chigaru:
I heard his father say
He doesn't want this stray

Choir:
Ooh

Taka:
I dare you to say that again
To my face
What did you say 'bout my brother?
That's not a stray
That's my brother
You stay away from my brother
'Cause I say so

Taka and Choir:
If you put your paws on my brother
You'll meet the jaws of his brother

Taka:
Those are the laws for my brother

Taka: (spoken)
Where'd he go?

Mufasa:
I always wanted a brother
I still remember my mother
One season after another

All:
One season after another

Choir:
One season after another
One season after another

Taka:
Everyone sing for my brother
Do anything for my brother
Soon, I'll be king with my brother
By my side

Mufasa:
I always wanted a brother

Mufasa and Taka:
Now, we rely on each other
One season after another

Taka:
Hey, Mufasa

Mufasa:
Yes, Taka?

Taka:
I'll race you to the other side

Mufasa:
Race you to the other side

Mufasa and Taka:
Race you to the other side
