Think about the advice you are given, lion cubs, and if it is silly, don't follow it!

Hyena's New Coat is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis[]

Hyena is tired of being a scavenger and decides to try his hand at hunting. A passing rabbit advises him to disguise himself in banana leaves and hide near the water hole, where he can wait to grab unsuspecting prey. He then warns the hyena not to hunt rabbits, or else a curse will befall him. Hyena comments that he would rather eat farm animals anyway, and Rabbit suggests that he wear a lamp on his tail to ward off hunters, who will mistake him for a spirit.

Hyena takes Rabbit's advice and steals into a farm at night to steal a calf. However, once he has grabbed hold of his prey, the calf starts to moo, attracting the attention of a farmer, who bursts out of his house brandishing a spear. Terrified, Hyena flees, and as he runs, the lamp on his tail singes his fur, leaving him with a thin, ragged coat that takes a long time to grow back. To this day, hyenas refuse to ask for advice on how to hunt.
