Crab once had a head as we have, lion cubs. But he angered Elephant and lost it. Let me tell you how.

How Crab Lost His Head is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis[]

One day, Elephant invites Crab and Eagle to hunt with him. Though Crab is pleased to have been invited, he worries about his slow speed. The three friends meet the next day, and Eagle and Elephant quickly outpace the much slower Crab. Unperturbed, Crab ties a net between two trees, and a wounded buck gets caught in the trap. In this way, Crab catches all the animals that have been wounded by Eagle and Elephant.

Late in the afternoon, Eagle and Elephant return to Crab and see that he has caught a multitude of creatures. Furious that he has been outmatched by a crab, Elephant threatens to kill Crab, who gives over his catches in return for his life. Once to safety, Crab begins to plan his revenge.

In secret, Crab tells Elephant's wife to prepare him a meal with lots of peppers in it. He then scurries off, fills a waterhole with earth, and buries himself in the soil. Eventually, Eagle and Elephant return from hunting, and they eat the peppery stew served by Elephant's wife. After the meal, they journey to the waterhole to relieve their mouths, but find it filled up.

The two dig into the soil and unearth Crab, whom Elephant immediately recognizes as the culprit. In a fury, he breaks off Crab's head, and the two take their fill from the now bubbling waterhole. A blind Crab asks a crayfish for help, and the crayfish attaches two eyes to Crab's shoulders to help him see. After thanking the crayfish, Crab scuttles off to make his home elsewhere.
