How Baboon Lost his Tail is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.
Synopsis[]
Baboon and Hare are great friends who often share food with one another. However, Baboon proves himself to be greedy and eats more than his fair share. One day, he gobbles up every scrap of food in sight, leaving Hare angry and thirsty for revenge. The next day, Hare tells Baboon about a field full of maize and asks his friend for help in carrying all the food. Baboon agrees to meet Hare the next night, but before their meeting, Hare and his family weave a grass rope and leave it in the maize field by a pile of cobs.
When Baboon arrives to help gather the maize, Hare ties his tail to the grass rope and alerts a nearby farmer to Baboon's presence. In a rage, the farmer begins to whip Baboon, who is unable to escape because his tail is held in place by Hare's grass rope. Finally, his tail snaps, and he escapes, though the tail never grows back and his bottom is bare for the rest of his life.
