"He Lives In You" a song composed by Lebo M, Mark Mancina, and Jay Rifkin for The Lion King II: Simba's Pride. It was released on September 8, 1998, as part of the film's soundtrack.

Conception and development[]

The 1996 draft of The Lion King II: Simba's Pride did not include "He Lives in You". Rather, a song titled "King of the Hill" played during the presentation of Simba and Nala's newborn daughter.[1] In later drafts, the film opened with a prologue that introduced the Outsiders before cutting to Kiara's presentation. Animator Wendell Washer suggested there be a song to open and close the film.[2] According to director Darrell Rooney, it was then-Disney Chairman and CEO Michael Eisner's idea to have "He Lives In You" be the opening number of the film.[3]

Releases and alternative versions[]

The original version of "He Lives In You" was released on February 28, 1995, as part of Rhythm of the Pride Lands.[4][5]

The stage musical version of The Lion King uses two different versions of "He Lives In You": one sung by Mufasa and the other sung by Rafiki. Both versions of the song were released in 1997 as part of the original cast recording.[6][7]

"He Lives In You" was shortened for The Lion King II: Simba's Pride. This version of the song was released on September 8, 1998, as part of the film's soundtrack, Return to Pride Rock.[8]

In 1999, the Simba's Pride version of "He Lives In You" as well as a version of the song sung by Tina Turner were released as part of The Lion King Collection.[9]

On September 30, 2003, the karaoke version of "He Lives In You" was released as part of Disney's Karaoke Series: The Lion King.[10][11]

On October 3, 2011, both the Return to Pride Rock and Tina Turner versions of "He Lives In You" were re-released as part of The Lion King Collection (Deluxe Edition).[12][13]

"He Lives In You" was reimagined for the 2019 remake of The Lion King as a Xhosa cover sung by Lebo M. It was released on July 11, 2019, as part of the film's soundtrack.[14][15]

Rafiki presents Kiara to the Pride Landers during the "He Lives In You" sequence.

"He Lives In You" is the first song heard in The Lion King II: Simba's Pride. The film opens at dusk, as Pride Landers begin to travel toward Pride Rock for the presentation of Simba's daughter, Kiara. Once the Pride Landers have assembled below Pride Rock, Simba and Nala walk onto the promontory with Kiara and give her to Rafiki. He, in turn, holds the cub up for all the Pride Landers to see, and they erupt into cheers for their future queen. After the ceremony, Rafiki anoints Kiara's forehead with gourd juice, and the song ends.[16]

In other media[]

In the stage musical version of The Lion King, Mufasa sings "They Live In You" to young Simba to teach him about the Great Kings of the Past. Later, Rafiki sings a reprise of the song to an adult Simba in order to facilitate his communion with Mufasa's ghost and inspire him to return to the Pride Lands.[6]
