Hare may not be very big, but he's very clever. Look how he tricked Hyena!

Hare and Hyena is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.

Synopsis[]

Because he is in need of a job, Hare starts working for Lion by drying out the meat left over from his kill each day. One day, Hyena comes by while Lion is out hunting and demands that Hare give him some of the meat. Though Hare tries to protest that the meat does not belong to him, Hyena takes advantage of his large size to steal the meat and make a clean getaway.

This goes on for several days until Hare decides to set a trap for the thief. He digs a large pit and fills it with spikes, then covers the hole with grass. However, the plan goes badly, for Lion falls into the pit and dies instead of Hyena.

Swearing revenge on Hyena, Hare stuffs Lion's body, ties a strong rope around its neck, and hides it in the nearby forest. There, he waits for Hyena. When Hyena finally arrives and demands to have some meat, Hare gives it to him willingly and comments that Hyena would look lovely with a necklace around his neck. Flattered, Hyena allows Hare to tie a rope around his neck, the same rope that is tied to the stuffed Lion's body.

Just then, Hare shouts that Lion is returning, and Hyena takes off, dragging the stuffed body of Lion with him. No matter where he runs, Lion appears to be right on his tail. Eventually, Hyena hides in a hole, but after an hour, Lion still appears to be standing outside. He waits and waits for Lion to leave, but he does not, and it is not long before Hyena starves.
