Look out there, beyond the light. Across the deepest canyon.
Eshe on Milele[src]

The Great Canyon is a canyon beyond the borders of the Valley of Kings.

On their way to the fabled paradise of Milele, Mufasa and his companions passed through the Great Canyon. Eventually, the Outsiders caught up to them, and Sarabi incited an elephant stampede in a desperate bid for escape. Her plan worked, with the elephants dislodging rock pillars in the Great Canyon and thus cutting off the Outsiders' approach. Afterwards, Mufasa and his companions continued on their way, leaving the Great Canyon behind.

History[]

Mufasa and his allies travel through the Great Canyon.

While searching for Milele, Mufasa and his friends happened across the Great Canyon. From the top of the canyon, Rafiki asked Mufasa whether they should go across or go down, and Mufasa determined that they should go down, both because it would mask their tracks and because the Outsiders were closing in. At first, Sarabi doubted that Mufasa could pick up the enemy pride's scent, but when he instructed her to sniff the wind, she realized that he was right.

Together, the group entered the Great Canyon. While walking through it, Taka confessed to Mufasa that he had feelings for Sarabi, and Mufasa coached him on what to say. Taka then made an awkward, stilted attempt at flirtation.

Elephants stampede through the Great Canyon.

Eventually, the Outsiders caught up to the group, and Sarabi threw a beehive into the midst of a nearby elephant herd, inciting a stampede. In the ensuing chaos, she got knocked unconscious, and Mufasa dragged her beneath a rocky shelf, where he shielded her from the elephants. Meanwhile, the elephants knocked over several rock pillars that the Outsiders had been using as a bridge, thus cutting off their pursuit. With no other way to reach their quarry, the pride retreated.

Once the stampede had cleared, Rafiki revived Sarabi, and Mufasa lied that Taka had saved her life. Sarabi thanked Taka, and the group continued on their way. After leaving the Great Canyon behind, they journeyed on toward a snowy mountain in the distance.[1]

Trivia[]

  • In the novelization of Mufasa: The Lion King, there is an additional scene in which Mufasa and his friends get lost in the Great Canyon. Though they devolve into arguing and nearly split up, Rafiki encourages them to eat some nearby marula fruit. This quenches their thirst and lifts their spirits.[2]
