The gorge is a canyon in the Pride Lands.
In an attempt to get his brother and nephew killed, Scar lured young Simba to the gorge and instructed him to wait there for his father, Mufasa. In the meantime, Scar's hyena minions set off a wildebeest stampede and steered it into the gorge. Scar then notified Mufasa that his son was in danger, and the two hastened to the scene of the stampede. Mufasa managed to save Simba and began to climb to safety himself, only for Scar to intercept him and throw him to his death.
In the aftermath of the stampede, Simba found and grieved over his father's body. Scar convinced the cub that he was to blame for Mufasa's death and urged him to flee the Pride Lands, never to return. Though Scar sent his hyena minions after Simba with orders to kill him, the cub managed to escape into the desert, and the hyenas lied to Scar that their mission had been a success.
Years later, the Outsiders ambushed Simba and chased him into the gorge. In a desperate bid for escape, he began scaling a pile of logs. Nuka climbed after him and attempted to stop him but lost his footing and got crushed to death by falling logs. The next day, Kiara and Zira fell into the gorge, with Kiara managing to find purchase on a ledge, while Zira dangled precariously above the drop. Kiara offered to help Zira reach safety, but the Outsider refused and fell to her death in the raging river below.
History[]
Stampede[]

A herd of wildebeests stampedes into the gorge.
As part of a plot to assassinate Mufasa and his son, Simba, Scar lured Simba to the gorge with the lie that his father had a surprise for him. Though Simba pressed Scar for more information, he ordered Simba to stay where he was while he went to "fetch Mufasa." However, he instead signaled his hyena minions to incite a wildebeest stampede.
Upon seeing the stampede, Simba fled. Meanwhile, Scar fetched Mufasa and Zazu, and led them to the gorge. Once there, Mufasa leaped into the fray to save his son, while Zazu resolved to get help. However, Scar knocked him unconscious before he could do so. At the same time, Mufasa managed to bear Simba to safety but got pulled back into the stampede before he could escape himself. Eventually, he flung himself onto the side of the gorge and began to scale the steep wall, while Simba climbed to the top to meet him.

As Mufasa neared a ledge in the gorge walls, he called out to Scar for help, but Scar threw him to his death in the stampede below. Having witnessed his father's fall, Simba ran to the bottom of the gorge and found Mufasa's body. Scar approached and blamed Simba for the tragedy, then encouraged the cub to run away forever. As Simba fled the gorge, Scar sent his hyena minions to kill the cub.[1]
At the same time, Timon and Pumbaa passed through the gorge, and Timon resolved to live there. However, the stampede chased them until they fell into a river and floated downstream, eventually reaching the jungle.[2]
Simba's nightmare[]

One night, Simba had a nightmare in which Mufasa was clinging to the side of the gorge, while a wildebeest stampede raced by below. Though Simba tried to help Mufasa climb to safety, Scar grabbed him, and Mufasa fell to his death. As Simba turned on Scar in fury, Scar morphed into Kovu, then threw Simba into the gorge.[3]

Simba escapes the gorge.
While Simba was showing Kovu around a burned section of the Pride Lands, the Outsiders ambushed them. While Kovu got kicked aside by Vitani, Simba managed to flee into the gorge, with the Outsiders in hot pursuit. In an attempt to escape, Simba fled up a pile of loose logs. At that moment, Kovu appeared on a ridge above the logs, and Zira urged her son to kill Simba. Kovu, however, refused. In Kovu's stead, Nuka began to scale the log pile, only to slip, fall, and get crushed to death by logs.
After Nuka's death and Simba's escape, Zira blamed Kovu and slashed him across the face, giving him a scar. She accused him of having killed his own brother, and he fled from her in shame. Zira then incited the Outsiders to join her in attacking the Pride Lands while Simba was injured and weak.[3]
Battle between the Outsiders and Simba's pride[]

Zira clings to the side of the gorge.
Together, the Outsiders invaded the Pride Lands, and Simba's pride confronted them near the gorge. A battle broke out between the two prides, which only halted when Kovu and Kiara intervened, jumping in-between their warring parents. Though Kiara managed to convince the other Outsiders to stand down, Zira refused and made one last attempt on Simba's life. At the last second, Kiara jumped in-between Zira and her father, and both lionesses tumbled into the gorge, barely catching hold of the cliff walls.
At that moment, water began to surge through the gorge, and Simba climbed down the gorge walls to reach Kiara. Meanwhile, Kiara attempted to help Zira climb back to safety, but she refused and fell to her death in the river below. Simba then helped Kiara reach safety at the top of the gorge. There, the two prides reunited and left together for Pride Rock.[3]
