Do you mind? My name is Mr. Buttons. I have no intentions of hanging anyone's hide. And quite frankly, I resent the accusation.
―Mr. Buttons, after Timon accuses him of having measured a noose for Pumbaa[src]

Mr. Buttons is a male warthog.

In the disguise of a lemur, Mr. Buttons arranged the wedding between Pumbaa and Rosebud. Despite Pumbaa's best efforts to repulse Rosebud, she expressed romantic interest in him, as she had never been allowed to behave as he did. Pumbaa eventually confessed that his crazed behavior had been an act, and Rosebud called off the wedding. This prompted Mr. Buttons to shed his disguise and chase after her, professing his love for her.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Mr. Buttons lived in Madagascar.[1]

Pumbaa's arranged marriage[]

While Pumbaa was napping, Mr. Buttons (in a lemur disguise) began measuring the warthog. Timon deduced that Pumbaa was either being fitted for a tie to get married in or a noose to be hanged from. Believing it to be the second option, he tackled Mr. Buttons and ordered Pumbaa to run. Instead of fleeing, the warthog trampled Timon and Mr. Buttons. The lemur told Timon and Pumbaa that he had been measuring Pumbaa because the warthog was set to be married. He then explained that he was there to ensure that the wedding was done according to the warthog code.

MAY Timon Pumbaa & Buttons5

Mr. Buttons explains the wedding to Timon and Pumbaa.

Timon was mad that Pumbaa had never told him about the wedding, but the warthog was just as confused. Mr. Buttons told them that the wedding had been set up by Pumbaa's parents before he was born. The lemur then introduced Pumbaa to his betrothed, Rosebud. He rushed the sow off to rest and told Pumbaa that the wedding would be at noon the next day, then reminded him not to be late. Timon suggested they run away, but Pumbaa expressed that he should stay to honor the warthog code. Timon warned Pumbaa that if he married Rosebud, he would no longer hunt bugs, sing songs, or go on wacky, hijinks-filled adventures with his friend. This made Pumbaa change his mind. Timon promised to find a loophole in order to get his friend out of the wedding.

That night, Timon and Pumbaa snuck out to steal the Warthog Traditions and Bylaws book. Using spy equipment, they climbed a tree, zip-lined across a clearing, and landed beside a sleeping Mr. Buttons. They replaced the lemur's copy of the book with an identical one, then ran away.

MAY Pumbaa Buttons & Rosebud3

Mr. Buttons reads at Pumbaa and Rosebud's wedding.

While reading the book, the two discovered that the groom in a warthog wedding had no say in whether he wanted to participate in the wedding, as it was for the bride to decide. Timon realized that if Pumbaa could make himself disgusting, perhaps Rosebud would not want to marry him. Pumbaa went about trying to be uncouth and gross, but Timon was unsatisfied. He made the warthog soak in a mud pit while eating stinkbug burritos in the hopes that it would improve his repulsiveness.

Mr. Buttons was infuriated that Pumbaa showed up two hours after the wedding had been scheduled to begin. Pumbaa arrived in an odd outfit, smelling terrible. Mr. Buttons began the ceremony, but before the end, Pumbaa belched and knocked a gazebo onto the lemur. Mr. Buttons pointed out that Pumbaa was violating all the sacred warthog laws. He told Rosebud that she could choose not to marry Pumbaa if she wanted. She, however, was madly in love with Pumbaa because she had never been allowed to behave in such a repulsive manner. Pumbaa then revealed to her that he had been faking his crazy behavior. After she called off the wedding and ran away, Mr. Buttons took off his lemur costume to reveal that he was actually a disgusting warthog. He then chased Rosebud into the sunset while professing his love for her.[1]

Physical appearance[]

Mr. Buttons is a small, short, and skinny warthog. He has green-tinted brown fur, with a pale underbelly, a dark brown mane, and brown eyes.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Mr. Buttons is very serious and stuffy. While arranging Pumbaa and Rosebud's wedding, he was strict about the two following the rules and showing up on time. He is deeply in love with Rosebud.[1]
