I want you back in the sounder. You belong here with us. You belong here with me.
―Sharla to Pumbaa[src]

Sharla is a female warthog. She is the leader of a sounder of warthogs.

Sharla and her sounder came across a flock of guinea fowl who wanted their supply of bugs. Since the birds had the ability to strip flesh from bone in ten seconds, the warthogs took refuge in a hut. The guinea fowl surrounded the hut, trapping the warthogs inside, and so the sounder sent out a distress call. Shortly afterward, Pumbaa and his friend, Timon, answered the call and helped rescue the sounder from the guinea fowl. Though Sharla asked Pumbaa to stay with her, he insisted that he was a wanderer and that she would always dislike his smell. The two then parted on amicable terms.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Sharla was a member of a sounder of warthogs. She used to be close friends with a fellow warthog named Pumbaa. After Pumbaa's exile, she was voted the Head Hog of her sounder.[1]

Reunion with Pumbaa[]

HIWTHI Pumbaa & Sharla

Sharla reunites with Pumbaa.

As Timon and Pumbaa traipsed the jungle and ate bugs off a battered jeep, they heard a distress call. The two journeyed to another part of Africa and discovered that the call was coming from a hut. Pumbaa explained that a group of warthogs was making the call. The two soon realized that the hut was surrounded by guinea fowl, who were the natural enemies and worst nightmares of warthogs. Pumbaa stated that the guinea fowl were there for the warthogs' supply of bugs and that the warthogs were unable to leave the hut because the guinea fowl would strip the flesh from their bones in seconds. This made Timon want to leave, but Pumbaa suggested that they save the warthogs since they had answered the call.

Timon and Pumbaa used a rope to get inside the hut. Meanwhile, the warthogs believed that they were doomed, not only because of the guinea fowl, but because the rainy season would soon fill up the hut with water and thus drown them. They started to think up a way to leave the hut and survive the guinea fowl attack, but Timon and Pumbaa interrupted by falling into the hut. Sharla was happy to see Pumbaa again and told him that she had never forgotten him. Pumbaa then introduced Timon to his old sounder and explained that he had been banished. The three male warthogs clarified that it had been because of his gas problem.

Sharla condemns her fellows for criticizing Pumbaa's smell.

When the male warthogs tried to drive Pumbaa out, Sharla stuck up for him and told the other warthogs to give him a chance, as he had answered their distress call. Sharla asked Pumbaa what his plan was, and he suggested that they have Timon come up with an idea since he was the "brains of the outfit." Timon pointed out that the only way to get rid of the guinea fowl was to think like them.

When all of Timon's ideas ended in failure, Pumbaa came up with a plan of his own. He and Timon returned to the jungle to find the battered jeep from earlier. Pumbaa stated that the jeep was perfect, as it was big enough to carry the warthogs' supply of bugs and fast enough to outrun the guinea fowl. Timon commented that it was broken and would take weeks to repair unless one of them was a certified fixer upper, which gave Pumbaa an idea. Pumbaa promptly received a certificate for being a fixer upper, and Timon and Pumbaa fixed the jeep. They returned to the warthogs' hut and got through the gate without letting the guinea fowl enter.

HIWTHI Pumbaa & Sharla11

Sharla and Pumbaa say their goodbyes.

Later that night, Sharla and Pumbaa were talking under the moonlight. Sharla told Pumbaa that she wanted him to return to the sounder, as he belonged with them. However, Pumbaa informed her that he would prefer to stay with Timon as a wanderer and reminded her that he could not have her covering her snout from his smell forever. She realized that he was right.

The next morning, Timon and the male warthogs put the bag of bugs on the jeep. Sharla gave Pumbaa a kiss on the cheek as her final goodbye to him, after which Timon and Pumbaa left the hut and tried to outrun the guinea fowl with the jeep. After Timon and Pumbaa fell off a cliff with the jeep, it was revealed that the bag was full of firecrackers instead of bugs. The firecrackers exploded and turned the guinea fowl into hot meals. Pumbaa then explained that he had used the bag of firecrackers to fool the guinea fowl into thinking that it had bugs inside it. The real bag of bugs, he revealed, was with Sharla and her sounder. Just then, the sounder made a call to signify that the problem had been resolved.[1]

Physical appearance[]

Sharla is a small but stout warthog. She has pink fur, with black hooves, red lips, and white tusks. Her eyes are black.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Sharla: Pumbaa, it's been so long!
Pumbaa: I see you've been voted Head Hog.
Sharla: But I've never forgotten you!
Pumbaa: Nor I you!
—Sharla reunites with Pumbaa[src]

Sharla is compassionate and kind-hearted. She can be somewhat authoritative and demanding but ultimately serves the needs of her sounder. Despite Pumbaa's banishment, she retains romantic feelings for him and has not forgotten him. Unlike the other warthogs in her sounder, Sharla is willing to stick up for Pumbaa and often shows him gratitude for his good deeds.[1]
