You never do anything on purpose. You're a natural disaster! Why, you couldn't catch a bug if it flew into your mouth.
Timon to Pumbaa[src]

A Day Without Pumbaa is a short story inspired by The Lion King. It was published by Disney Press on November 14, 2005, as part of Disney 5-Minute Stories: Friendship.

Publisher's summary[]

"Read along with Disney! Pumbaa might be the clumsiest warthog in the jungle, but he is the best friend a meerkat and lion cub could ask for. Follow along with word-for-word narration as Simba and Timon learn to appreciate their favorite disaster."[1]

Synopsis[]

Timon was teaching Simba how to catch grubs when Pumbaa suddenly swung in on a vine and crashed into him. Though Pumbaa apologized for his clumsiness, Timon accused him of being a "disaster" and declared that he could not catch a grub, even if it flew into his mouth. In an attempt to prove Timon wrong, Pumbaa lunged at a nearby grub, only to fall into a puddle and splatter his friends with mud. Enraged, Timon exclaimed that he had had enough of Pumbaa's disasters. Pumbaa asked Simba if he agreed with Timon, and Simba admitted that Pumbaa sometimes did behave disastrously. Believing that his friends were better off without him, Pumbaa plodded off sadly into the jungle.

At that moment, a storm moved in overhead. Simba warned Timon that they could not let Pumbaa go, but Timon insisted that Pumbaa would be back by lunchtime. Time passed, the storm moved on, and still, Pumbaa did not return. Simba began to worry that they had been too hard on Pumbaa and wondered if he was okay, while Timon remained unconcerned and pointed out that he had chosen to leave them.

Per Timon's insistence, the two attempted to have fun without Pumbaa, to no avail. Just as they were debating what to do next, Pumbaa burst from the undergrowth and plowed into them, spilling the grubs that he had been planning to give them as a gift. Distressed, he exclaimed that he was the worst friend ever, but Simba and Timon interrupted hastily that they had missed him, even his disasters.
