An elephant graveyard is no place for a young prince.
Scar[src]

The Elephant Graveyard is a desolate wasteland beyond the borders of the Pride Lands. It is the former home of Shenzi's clan.

In a plot to kill his young nephew, Simba, Scar informed the cub about the Elephant Graveyard's existence. Simba, in turn, took his friend Nala to the Elephant Graveyard, where they were attacked by Scar's hyena friends. Though the hyenas nearly killed the cubs, Mufasa intervened and chased them off with a warning to never come near his son again.

Later, Scar journeyed to the Elephant Graveyard and gave his hyena minions a haunch of meat. He lamented their failure to kill Simba, to which Banzai questioned if they had been expected to kill Mufasa as well. To the hyenas' confusion, Scar answered in the affirmative. He then persuaded Shenzi's entire clan to help him assassinate Mufasa and assume the throne of Pride Rock.

History[]

Shenzi's attack on Simba and Nala[]

A trio of trespassers!

Simba and Nala visit the Elephant Graveyard.

One morning, Mufasa took his son, Simba, to the summit of Pride Rock. As they overlooked the vast territory of the Pride Lands, Simba remarked on a "shadowy place" on the horizon, and Mufasa warned him that it was beyond their borders. He then forbade Simba to go there. Shortly afterwards, in an attempt to lead Simba into danger, Scar revealed that the "shadowy place" was, in fact, an elephant graveyard.

Along with his best friend, Nala, Simba traveled to the Elephant Graveyard, only for Zazu to intercept them and warn them that they were way beyond the borders of the Pride Lands. Though Zazu claimed that they were in great danger, Simba merely walked up to a nearby elephant skull, declared that he laughed in the face of danger, then gave an exaggerated laugh. At that moment, three hyenas from within the skull cackled back, and Simba cowered behind Zazu.

Simba and Nala run into a dead-end in the Elephant Graveyard.

The three hyenas - Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed - approached Zazu and the cubs, accusing them of trespassing. Despite Zazu's attempts to escape, Shenzi recognized him as Mufasa's majordomo, and Simba revealed that he was the future king of Pride Rock. The hyenas schemed to eat the cubs, during which time Simba, Nala, and Zazu snuck away. Though the cubs managed to escape, the hyenas nabbed Zazu and trapped him in a geyser, which exploded and shot him into the air. Simba confronted the hyenas, telling them to pick on somebody "their own size," and they immediately gave chase.

Simba and Nala fled through the Elephant Graveyard, climbing up a hill of bones. However, Nala slipped and nearly got eaten by Shenzi until Simba ran back for her and slashed Shenzi across the face. The cubs continued running, only to meet a dead-end. As the hyenas advanced on them, Simba roared pitifully, and they mocked him. At that moment, a real lion's roar echoed through the graveyard, and Mufasa appeared, attacking the hyenas. After subduing them, he warned them to never come near his son again, and they fled.

Timon and Pumbaa visit the Elephant Graveyard.

With the danger abated, Mufasa chastised Simba for having disobeyed him, and Simba apologized. As Mufasa and Zazu led the cubs home, Nala whispered to Simba that she had thought he had been very brave. Meanwhile, on a cliff above, Scar watched the scene unfold in disapproval.[1]

At the same time, Timon and Pumbaa stumbled upon the Elephant Graveyard and resolved to live there. However, upon seeing Mufasa attack the hyenas, they opted to move on.[2]

Scar's alliance with Shenzi's clan[]

Stick with me, and you'll never go hungry again!
―Scar to Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed[src]

That evening, in an area of geysers within the Elephant Graveyard, Banzai complained about his wounds, while Ed laughed at him. The two began to scuffle, but Shenzi ordered them to stop and remarked that it was no wonder they were at the bottom of the food chain. She and Banzai proceeded to mock lions, only for Scar to reveal his presence on a nearby ledge. He expressed disapproval of the hyenas for having failed to kill Simba and Nala but still threw them a zebra haunch as food. While they ate, Shenzi pointed out that Mufasa had been with the cubs, and Banzai asked sarcastically if they had been expected to kill Mufasa. To their confusion, Scar answered, "Precisely."

Scar then revealed his plan to kill both Mufasa and Simba, and become the king of Pride Rock. He vowed to never let the hyenas go hungry again, and they pledged him their loyalty.[1] Unbeknownst to the hyenas, Timon and Pumbaa had wandered into their section of the graveyard, determined to live there. When they spotted the hyenas, however, they changed their minds and fled.[2]

After Mufasa's death and Simba's disappearance, the hyenas left the Elephant Graveyard to live in the Pride Lands.[1] Later, a full-grown Simba deposed Scar and drove the hyenas out of his kingdom. They fled not only the Pride Lands, but the Elephant Graveyard as well.[3]

Nuka and Vitani's visit[]

Eurgh. This place is even creepier since the hyenas ran off.
Nuka on the Elephant Graveyard[src]

Years later, Nuka and Vitani visited the Elephant Graveyard to collect fire. Upon arriving there, Nuka remarked that the place was even "creepier" since the hyenas had left. Together, the young lions used geysers to ignite dry shoots, then ran off to set the Pride Lands ablaze.[3]

Attributes[]

It's really creepy.
―Nala on the Elephant Graveyard[src]

The Elephant Graveyard is a large and sprawling wasteland that is littered with the remains of elephants. The landscape is hilly and uneven, with several massive piles of bones scattered throughout. One area of the graveyard is a dead-end clearing with high rock walls. Considered to be a "creepy" place, the Elephant Graveyard is often shrouded in mist, courtesy its many active geysers.[1]

Trivia[]

  • The main skull in the Elephant Graveyard bears tusks resembling those of a woolly mammoth, not an African elephant.[4] However, woolly mammoths never lived in Africa.[5]
  • In Disney Dreamlight Valley, the main skull in the Elephant Graveyard serves as Scar's home.[8]
