Disney Villains: Scar is an American comic series inspired by The Lion King. It was written by Chuck Brown and illustrated by Trevor Fraley. The first issue was published by Dynamite Entertainment on April 5, 2023, and the last issue on July 26, 2023.
Conception and development[]
In order to prepare for Disney Villains: Scar, writer Chuck Brown watched The Lion King multiple times. "We had to find a way to make our story fit in seamlessly with the film," he said. "This story also needs to add something of value to the original story."[2] He spent hours studying the film and analyzing Scar's desires, motivations, and internal struggles. With help from his editor, Nate Cosby, he worked to craft a vision of Scar's story that was both complementary to the original story and able to offer new insights into Scar's character and the world of The Lion King. Though he acknowledged that Scar is "evil," he made an effort to explore the "spark of humanity" in him through looking at his past and the forces that shaped him into a villain.
On retelling The Lion King from Scar's perspective, Brown described it as a "unique challenge" due to there being a generation of people who had a strong emotional connection to the story and Scar himself. While he enjoyed the opportunity to craft unexpected narrative twists, he admitted that it was difficult to make his additions to the story feel organic and true to the original tale.[1]
Artist Trevor Fraley stated that his goal was to keep the characters' "iconic looks" while making them "fresh and interesting" for his and Brown's take on the original story. He used inspiration from The Lion King to draw lions for the comic series.[2]
