Without thinking? Good! That's how we do everything!
―Chungu to Janja[src]

Chungu is a male hyena. He is a member of Jasiri's clan.

Initially, Chungu was a member of Janja's clan, alongside his friend Cheezi. The clan frequently attacked the Pride Lands and thus became enemies of the Lion Guard. Eventually, Chungu and his clan allied with the spirit of Scar and joined his army, whose goal was to destroy the Pride Lands. However, when Scar suspected Janja of harboring traitorous feelings, he tricked his clan into entering the Lair of the Lion Guard, where Scar's allies trapped them with fire. The Lion Guard helped the clan escape, and subsequently, the hyenas switched allegiance and helped the Pride Landers defeat Scar. After Scar's fall, Chungu and his clan members integrated into Jasiri's clan.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Cheezi: Did he call us "fur-brains?"
Chungu: Yeah, I like it.
—Cheezi and Chungu on Janja[src]

Chungu lived in the Outlands. He was a member of Janja's clan. As a pup, he befriended two fellow hyenas: Cheezi and Janja. One day, the three pups attempted to steal an egret egg, only to be confronted by a young Kion and his friends Beshte, Bunga, and Fuli. Together, the Pride Landers chased the hyenas back into the Outlands, after which the egg hatched into Ono.[1]

First skirmish with the Lion Guard[]

And the clouds! They turned into roaring lions!
―Chungu on the Roar of the Elders[src]

When Bunga strayed into the Outlands, Cheezi and Chungu were ordered by Janja to fetch the honey badger. However, they were stopped by Kion, who used the Roar of the Elders to defeat them. After the defeat, Cheezi and Chungu tried to explain what had happened, but Janja did not believe them until Mzingo corraborated their story. Because of this, Janja resolved to attack the Pride Lands with his clan. Together, the clan launched an attack on the Pride Lands, but Cheezi and his companions were defeated by the Lion Guard.[2]

Skirmish with Jasiri[]

I'm always starvin'!
―Chungu[src]
NeverJudgeaHyenabyitsSpots400

Chungu faces off with Jasiri.

Chungu, along with Janja and Cheezi, attacked a herd of oryx, which drew the Lion Guard to the scene. Kion ordered the rest of the Lion Guard to calm the herd while he went after the hyenas. However, during the pursuit, a log snapped under Kion's paws, and he fell into the river below, which swept him into the Outlands.

Later, Chungu and his clan confronted a female hyena named Jasiri, who had helped Kion get to Flat Ridge Rock. Cheezi was the first hyena to attack Jasiri, but was easily defeated. Next, she was attacked by Chungu, then finally pinned down by Janja. Just then, Kion returned and saved Jasiri by using the Roar of the Elders to scare Cheezi and his clan away.[3]

Kidnapping Kiara[]

Mzingo reported to Janja that Kiara, Simba's daughter, had been named the temporary queen of the Pride Lands. Chungu hovered behind his leader with Cheezi, listening to the report. Later, at Broken Rock, Chungu helped Janja surround Kiara, but the hyenas were chased off by Kion and the Lion Guard.[4]

Plot to trap the Lion Guard[]

Tell us the plan! Tell us the plan!
―Chungu to Janja[src]
EyeoftheBeholder435

Chungu and his clanmates prepare to trap the Lion Guard in a ravine.

Chungu instigated a wildebeest stampede with Cheezi and Janja. The hyenas attempted to use the rising dust from the stampede to mask their movements, but Ono spotted them from the air and warned the Lion Guard of their location. The hyenas were driven off. Later, they overheard the vultures talking and realized that Ono had lost his sight.

Under Janja's instruction, Cheezi and Chungu helped trap the Lion Guard in a ravine. With the team trapped, they attempted to pick off a herd of zebras, but Ono once again came to the rescue, and Kion freed his team using the Roar of the Elders. Once more at a loss, the hyenas fled into the Outlands.[5]

Hunting Dogo[]

Chungu joined Cheezi and Janja in chasing Dogo, a jackal pup, due to his trespassing on their territory. However, their efforts were thwarted by Kion and the Lion Guard. To Kion's surprise, Janja willingly let the Lion Guard take Dogo away, and the hyena clan retreated.[6]

Bunga's trespassing[]

Why do we always have to work for our food?
―Chungu[src]

When Bunga discovered that he was immune to snake bites, he attempted to climb to the top of the volcano. Janja was alerted to Bunga's presence by Cheezi, and the hyenas attempted to eat the honey badger until the rest of the Lion Guard showed up to drive them off.[7]

Attack on Mtoto[]

Here, dinner, dinner, dinner.
―Chungu[src]
Heredinner

Chungu lies in wait for Beshte and Mtoto.

Along with Cheezi and Janja, Chungu snuck into the Pride Lands, where he encountered a group of young animals playing "Lion Guard." The hyenas immediately began to follow them. When they caught up to Mtoto and his friends, the young animals fled in a panic. After a brief skirmish, the hyenas targeted Mtoto as the slowest. Meanwhile, the young animals rushed up to Beshte and begged him to save Mtoto.

Just in time, Beshte showed up to save Mtoto from the hyenas, and the two escaped into the water. Together, Beshte and Mtoto managed to avoid the hyenas, who skulked on the edges of the river, trying to catch a bite of them as they passed. Eventually, the rest of the Lion Guard appeared and dispatched of the hyenas, who were knocked into the pool, where they were chased in circles by a crocodile float.[8]

Capturing Tamaa[]

Nice try, birdie. But we ain't letting you go until Janja says so.
―Chungu to Tamaa[src]

Chungu, along with Cheezi and Janja, invaded the Pride Lands and started chasing a herd of impalas, but the Lion Guard chased the hyenas away from the herd. After leaving the impalas behind, Chungu and his friends happened to overhear a drongo named Tamaa and cornered him in a bush. Tamaa begged the hyenas not to eat him, and Janja assured him that he had other plans for the drongo. The hyenas then forced Tamaa to imitate Kion's voice, which sent a herd of impalas into the Outlands. The plan worked, and the hyenas held Tamaa captive as they followed the herd into the Outlands.

Gettingawayfromus

Cheezi and Chungu hold Tamaa captive.

Back in the Pride Lands, the Lion Guard happened across a zebra who was fervently trying to escape danger. Upon being questioned, the zebra revealed that he and the impalas had heard Kion instructing them to go to the Outlands for safety. Suspicious, Kion surmised that Janja was forcing Tamaa to herd impalas into the Outlands for his own satisfaction, and the Lion Guard rushed to put a stop to the danger.

Meanwhile, Tamaa was forced to watch as Janja crept up on the herd of impalas, who had been successfully herded into the Outlands. With Janja distracted, Tamaa managed to imitate his voice and trick Cheezi into letting him go. Once free, Tamaa imitated the other Lion Guard members and scared Chungu and his friends into a huddle. However, Janja realized that Cheezi had let the drongo go, and he cornered Tamaa in the ravine. Just in time, the real Lion Guard arrived and chased the hyenas away from Tamaa and the herd of impalas.[9]

Attack on Thurston's herd[]

I wouldn't mind if they slowed down a little. I'm gettin' dizzy...
―Chungu on Thurston's herd[src]

As Ono escorted a zebra herd home, they were watched from a nearby ridge by Janja and his cronies, Cheezi and Chungu. The three hyenas resolved to eat the zebra herd. Once the herd was back in their grazing grounds, the hyenas attacked, and Ono rushed off to fetch the rest of his team. Once there, Kion instructed his friends to take on Cheezi and Chungu, while he handled Janja. Beshte and Fuli managed to stop Cheezi and Chungu, who ran off to the Outlands.[10]

Attack on Muhimu's herd[]

Oogie boogie boogie!
―Chungu[src]

When Kion led a herd of gazelles and a herd of zebras through the Outlands, one of the zebras gave birth to a foal, whose loud bray attracted Janja's attention. Together with Cheezi and Janja, Chungu attempted to scatter the herd, but they stood together, protecting the zebra and her foal. Unwilling to give up, Chungu continued fighting until the hyenas were defeated by Bunga, Kion, and Muhimu's foal.[11]

Banishment from Janja's clan[]

Oh, who's gonna tell us what to do? Who's gonna call us "fur-brains?"
―Chungu to Cheezi[src]

Janja led his clan to the Pride Lands and waited for the Lion Guard to clear out so that the hyenas could attack a herd of wildebeests. However, in the midst of the ambush, Janja slipped on mud and fell at the Lion Guard's paws. Cheezi and Chungu fell behind him and revealed to Kion that they had been planning to attack the wildebeests, which caused Kion to use the Roar of the Elders to banish the clan back to the Outlands.

Cheezi and Chungu lament being banished from Janja's clan.

Once back home, Janja blamed the clan's failure on Cheezi and Chungu, and banished the two from the clan. He then hired Nne and Tano to take their place, and the two new recruits barked and snarled at Cheezi and Chungu until they fled to the Pride Lands.

Safe from Janja's new crew, Cheezi and Chungu lamented being banished by Janja. To make themselves feel better, they attempted to imitate Janja and called themselves "fur-brains," his favorite nickname for them. However, this only succeeded in depressing them further. Just then, they caught sight of a herd of antelope and attempted to attack them. However, they ended up banging heads and startled the herd off.

With the antelope gone, Cheezi and Chungu began to feast on a pile of leftovers, but they were interrupted by a mudslide. The mud swept them away, and the Lion Guard arrived to rescue them. Upon realizing whom they had saved, the Lion Guard questioned them, and Cheezi and Chungu revealed that they were no longer affiliated with Janja. Kion reluctantly agreed to let them stay in the Pride Lands, as their feasting on leftovers could help the Circle of Life.

Cheezi and Chungu reunite with Janja, who allows them to rejoin his clan.

Later, the two ran into Janja, who denied wanting them back. Believing him to have been a dream, Cheezi and Chungu went back to sleep, though they were soon approached by the Lion Guard, who wanted to know where Janja had gone. Just then, the group heard Janja calling for his new minions, Nne and Tano, and they set off in search of him.

Eventually, the group met Janja, who was trapped on a ledge. Cheezi and Chungu jumped down to provide him company. Meanwhile, the Lion Guard defeated Nne and Tano, and Kion's Roar of the Elders caused the ledge to fall with Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu still on it. Upon landing, Janja invited his cronies to rejoin his crew, and Cheezi and Chungu raced after him in delight.[12]

Attack on Nala[]

Uh, I think she means it, Janja.
―Chungu on Nala[src]

The hyenas attack Nala.

When Janja and his clan invaded the Pride Lands, the Lion Guard drove them back into the Outlands. However, once the Lion Guard departed, Janja led his clan back into the kingdom, and the Lion Guard rushed back to stop them. Before the team could reach the hyenas, the clan ran into Kion's mother, Nala, who ordered Janja to return to his territory. Instead of heeding Nala's warning, Janja surrounded her with his cronies and ordered an attack. Just then, Kion arrived and, seeing his mother in danger, used the Roar of the Elders in rage. The blast was so powerful that it blew the hyenas back into the Outlands.[13]

Skirmish with Ono[]

We got beat by a legend?
―Chungu on Hadithi[src]

While out flying with his idol Hadithi, Ono spotted a group of klipspringers being trapped on the edge of a cliff by Janja and his minions, Cheezi and Chungu. He suggested that they use the Hadithi Spin to thwart the hyenas, but Hadithi argued that Ono was not ready for such a feat. He then took off for the ceremony, leaving Ono behind to deal with the crisis.

On his own, Ono attempted to stop the hyenas by using the Hadithi Spin, but fell and got his wing trapped beneath a boulder. Cheezi and Chungu hungrily climbed up the cliffs to reach him, while Janja rounded up the trapped klipspringers.

However, before the hyenas could hurt Ono, Hadithi returned with the Lion Guard, and Fuli fended off Cheezi and Chungu. Meanwhile, Bunga and Kion confronted Janja, while Beshte pushed a boulder down for the klipspringers to use as an escape. As Fuli guided the klipspringers to safety, one slipped and fell, prompting Janja and his minions to launch an attack. Just in time, Ono and Hadithi flew past and began to circle the hyenas, making them dizzy. Eventually, they toppled off the cliffs and landed in the water below.[14]

Attack on the Traveling Baboon Show[]

―Chungu[src]

The hyenas corner the baboons in a cave.

In the Outlands, Cheezi and Chungu were complaining about how hungry they were when they heard Uroho's troop playing music in the distance. They followed the sound to where Uroho was putting on a show for a meager audience of Outlanders. In the meantime, Janja began to chase Uroho's friends, Mwevi and Mwizi, in an attempt to eat them.

Cheezi and Chungu were watching Uroho's show in fascination when Janja ran by and ordered them to help him catch the baboons. The hyenas gave chase and cornered the baboons in a cavern. Just then, the Lion Guard showed up and defeated Cheezi, Chungu, and Janja, who reluctantly retreated.[15]

Scar's resurrection[]

Chungu and his clanmates attack a herd of elephants.

In the Pride Lands, the dry season came, and the Lion Guard became exceptionally busy. During their patrol, Ono informed his friends that Janja's clan was attacking Ma Tembo's herd. When the Lion Guard arrived at the scene, they were shocked that the hyenas would hunt elephants because it was a dangerous undertaking. The team then drove Janja and his clan away.

Later, Chungu helped attack the baboons who had started following Ma Tembo's herd. The Lion Guard arrived just in time, and Kion blasted the hyenas away with the Roar of the Elders.

Chungu expresses hesitation over recruiting Shupavu's skinks to spy on Rafiki and Makini.

Chungu and the crew returned to the Outlands, where they saw Ushari and decided to eat him. Before they could do so, Ushari asked Janja if he would like something meatier. Janja told him that he would, but could not because the Lion Guard kept driving his clan off. Ushari then revealed that that was because Kion had been getting advice from the spirit of his grandfather, Mufasa. He added that if the hyenas wanted to stop the Guard, they would need to find a way to talk to one of the Great Lions of the Past. He reminded Janja that there was one Great Lion who had always helped hyenas: Scar. He also reminded Janja that if Kion could talk to Mufasa, there was a way for them to talk to Scar.

Ushari then took Cheezi, Chungu, and Janja into the Pride Lands, where he summoned his skink friends to spy on Rafiki and find out if there was a way to talk to Scar. Janja and his crew waited as Ushari left with the skinks for Pride Rock. Ushari returned with information that Evil Lions of the Past like Scar appeared in fire if they were unleashed by the Roar and the bakora staff. The hyenas and Ushari then returned to the Outlands.

Cheezi, Chungu, and Janja plan to summon the spirit of Scar.

In the Outlands, Ushari and Janja decided to get Makini's bakora staff, then attack one of Kion's loved ones and bring them to the volcano, since Kion's Roars were at their most powerful when he was angry.

Chungu and the others kidnapped Kion's sister, Kiara, and took Makini's bakora staff. While the rest of the Guard rescued her, Janja tricked Kion by getting him to use the Roar out of anger, which caused the volcano to erupt. When Janja threw Makini's staff into the volcano, Scar was successfully summoned, thus giving Chungu and the rest of the Lion Guard's enemies their own spirit guide.[16]

Army of Scar[]

Alliance with Kiburi[]

Chungu was present as Kiburi's float joined Scar's side.[17]

Attack on Beshte[]

But he's the strongest. How are we supposed to do that, boss?
―Chungu to Janja on Beshte[src]
2017-09-27-00 50 04

Cheezi and Chungu express confusion over Scar's plan of taking down Beshte while he is alone in the Outlands.

A skink arrived at the volcano and informed Janja and his allies that Beshte was alone in the Outlands. Though Janja tried to dismiss the situation, Scar appeared and ordered his cronies to eliminate Beshte. When Cheezi and Chungu wondered how they might accomplish this, Scar declared that he had a plan.

Janja and his cronies watched as Beshte followed Shupavu and her skinks into a cavern. The skinks continued to lead Beshte through the cavern until they reached a dead-end. From above, the hyenas revealed themselves, and Beshte desperately tried to warn the skinks away from danger. Just then, the hyenas pushed a large boulder into the pit's exit, trapping Beshte, and the skinks escaped by slithering into crevices in the rock. Without his guides, Beshte was left at the mercy of the hyenas, who continued to push rocks into the pit in the hopes of crushing their quarry.

Meanwhile, Ono guided the Lion Guard to Rocky Plateau, and Fuli raced ahead to stop the hyenas from dropping a massive boulder on Beshte. As she teetered carefully atop the boulder, keeping it from falling into the pit, the other Guard members rushed in and engaged the hyenas in a fight. Down below, Beshte started to clear a path through the fallen rocks.

Eventually, Kion used the Roar of the Elders to clear the hyenas, and Beshte made his way to safety. Having failed to eliminate Beshte, Janja decided not to report back to Scar, but Ushari arrived promptly and told the hyenas that an unhappy Scar wished to speak with them.[18]

Assassination attempt on Jasiri[]

―Chungu on Thurston[src]

Cheezi and Chungu lament Jasiri's respect for the Circle of Life.

In the Outlands, Cheezi, Chungu, and Janja searched for the jackals in an attempt to forge an alliance with them. In the midst of their search, Jasiri appeared and marked the territory as her own, effectively stealing it from Janja due to his failure to re-mark his territory for the dry season. In a rage, Janja attacked her, only to be defeated and cast out of his own former territory.

Janja reported back to Ushari on his failure to recruit the jackals, and Cheezi and Chungu blamed Jasiri, which piqued Scar's interest and caused him to suggest adding her to their collective. Janja protested vehemently, and the three hyenas lamented Jasiri's respect for the Circle of Life as well as her friendship with the Lion Guard. Hearing this, Scar ordered his minions to drive Jasiri from their territory so that she was no longer a threat.

Cheezi and Chungu confront Thurston.

In the meantime, Jasiri played with two hyena pups, Tunu and Wema. Janja watched from afar and ordered his clan to attack the trio. Chungu and the clan launched their attack, and Jasiri desperately attempted to protect the pups from harm. In the midst of the fight, Janja forced the three into an open steam vent, where lava was steadily rising to the surface. As the clan gathered around, preventing any attempt at escape, Jasiri's sister Madoa resolved to get Kion's help.

Presently, the Lion Guard arrived and engaged in a fight with the hyenas, and Janja and his clan were effectively steered away from the edge of the steam vent. With the hyenas out of the way, Kion ordered Beshte to push a large rock into the lava flow, which allowed Jasiri and the pups to clamber to safety. Frightened, Chungu and the rest of the clan fled.[19]

Cheezi and Chungu attempt to steal melons from the elephants.

The Lion Guard caught Janja and his minions, Cheezi and Chungu, attempting to steal a supply of tikiti melons from the elephants. The Guard managed to fend off the hyenas and save most of the melons, but Kion decided to keep his team watching the melon patch to ensure that no more fruits were stolen.

The hyenas returned to their den, where they explained the situation to Scar and Ushari. After hearing Janja's story, Scar deduced that destroying the melon supply could offset the Circle of Life, as it would dehydrate the elephants. He then ordered the hyenas to return to the fruit patch. Janja protested the idea as foolishness, since the Lion Guard was waiting for them there, but Ushari volunteered to connect them with a powerful friend of his who could help them.

Cheezi, Chungu, and Janja steal melons under Kenge's leadership.

Once back in the Pride Lands, the hyenas met Ushari's friend Kenge for the first time. They were thoroughly intimidated by his massive size and strength, and asked him if he would help them find the Lion Guard. Kenge merely declared that he was going to wait until they found him.

Later, at the melon patch, Kenge quickly assumed authority over the hyenas, ordering them to roll the melons out of the patch. Just in time, Bunga and Ono arrived, with Bunga taking on Kenge while Ono stopped the hyenas from stealing the melons. However, he and Ono were both bitten, allowing Kenge and his hyena allies to escape with the melons.

Chungu watches, paralyzed, as Kenge battles Bunga.

Later, Bunga and Makini followed Kenge and the hyenas to Embamba Canyon, where Bunga distracted the thieves while Makini stole their melons and hid them behind rocks. While ridiculing his enemies, Bunga stumbled upon Kenge's trigger word: "little." In his attempts to catch Bunga, Kenge accidentally bit Cheezi and Chungu, paralyzing them. He nearly bit Janja when a melon was thrown his way, turning his attention to Makini.

Just then, a fully healed Lion Guard approached. The hyenas attempted to run, but were hindered by their paralyzed legs. Kion then used the Roar of the Elders to blast Kenge and the hyenas back to the Outlands, where the melons were out of their reach.[20]

Kidnapping Zazu[]

Ooh, ooh! I know! I know! You're Zazu.
―Chungu[src]

On a mission from Scar, Janja and his cronies, Cheezi and Chungu, lay in wait for Simba's majordomo, Zazu. As Zazu swooped by, monitoring the kingdom for his morning report, the hyenas jumped out of hiding and abducted him, bearing him straight to the Outlands.

Chungu helps kidnap Simba's majordomo, Zazu.

In the Outlands, Cheezi and Chungu monitored Zazu, who was trapped in a bone cage, while Janja sought an audience with Scar. Zazu tried to trick Cheezi and Chungu into letting him go, but Janja arrived in time to stop his foolish minions. He demanded that Zazu reveal the secrets of the Pride Lands to them, but Zazu refused. Janja then backed the bone cage up to the edge of a vent, where steam burned the tips of Zazu's feathers. This made Zazu fearfully give in to their request. However, he provided only shallow, unhelpful information about Simba.

The Lion Guard happened to overhear Zazu's singing and rushed to the rescue. They arrived just in time to stop the hyenas from eating Zazu and engaged the clan in a fight. The Lion Guard triumphed, and Janja and his cronies retreated.[21]

Attack on Rafiki[]

Ooh, ooh! That means he can sense you!
―Chungu to Scar on Rafiki[src]

Chungu and his fellow hyenas were chasing Twiga and Juhudi in the Pride Lands when the Lion Guard arrived to stop them. As they were running, the hyenas noticed Fuli, Bunga, and Ono splitting off from Kion and Beshte to take down Reirei's pack. Janja sent Nne and Tano to slow them down. However, when the two hyenas failed, Janja sent Cheezi and Chungu to assist them. With all four hyenas working together, they were able to slow down the Lion Guard. To their surprise, Janja called them back before they were able to cause too much trouble.

Chungu and his fellow hyenas advance on Rafiki.

The hyenas met up with Reirei's pack in the Outlands and returned to the volcano, where they heard from Scar about his next plan: to confuse the Lion Guard into splitting up, then take down Rafiki. Scar worried about the mandrill's ability to sense the Great Lions of the Past, and Chungu exclaimed that that included Scar. After a bit of squabbling between the hyenas and jackals, Scar chose Janja's clan to take out Rafiki.

After the gathered Outlanders left, Janja and Reirei argued about who was the smartest. The hyenas left and approached Rafiki, who was near Mapango Cliffs. They were quickly overpowered by the mandrill. When the Lion Guard arrived, the hyenas were again defeated. Reirei's pack arrived to even the odds, and the two groups joined together for one final battle with the Lion Guard, Rafiki, and their ally, Tamaa. Chungu was quickly overpowered by Beshte. The hyenas and jackals were once again defeated and so retreated to the Outlands.[22]

Defeat in the volcano[]

Chungu and the rest of the Army of Scar cornered the Lion Guard in the midst of the Outlands, then in the volcano. They were defeated when Kion used the Roar of the Elders to clear a path of escape.[23]

Occupation of Kilio Valley[]

Reirei: You hyenas? You couldn't find your own tails without us!
Chungu: Why? Where'd they go?
—Chungu and Reirei[src]

After Kilio Valley successfully burned to the ground, Scar ordered Chungu and the rest of the army to remain in the valley to guard it. Janja attempted to appoint himself the leader of the army, but Kiburi, Mzingo, and Reirei protested vehemently. The villains then began to compete over who should be in charge of the valley. They continued to argue as the Lion Guard looked on.[24]

Skirmish with Kinyonga[]

Cheezi and Chungu attempt to catch and eat Kinyonga.

While on patrol, Cheezi and Chungu spotted Kinyonga on a rock. Both hyenas lunged for her, but she disappeared just in time to evade them. Thinking that he had successfully eaten Kinyonga, Cheezi was satisfied, much to Chungu's dismay and jealousy.

Come nighttime, the hyenas attempted to block up a river, but the Lion Guard camouflaged themselves and launched a surprise attack. As the hyenas retreated, Cheezi wondered how the Lion Guard had managed to learn such a trick, to which Kinyonga suddenly appeared and took the credit. Her unexpected appearance startled the hyenas, who fell into the river and careened over the edge of Hakuna Matata Falls.[25]

Alliance with Thurston[]

Cheezi and Chungu trick Thurston into coming with them to the Outlands.

One day, Thurston bragged about how he was the true mastermind of the Lion Guard. Unbeknownst to Thurston, Cheezi and Chungu were listening from the underbrush. The two hyenas hatched a scheme to kidnap Thurston and force him to spill all of the Lion Guard's secrets. They then led him away with the promise that he could attend a party with them in the Outlands.

In the Outlands, Thurston informed the hyenas that the Lion Guard sneezed uncontrollably when exposed to red flowers. Cheezi and Chungu raced off to use this information against the Lion Guard, while Thurston stayed behind, pondering if it had been himself who was subject to the flowers.

Back in the Pride Lands, the Lion Guard was helping pangolins when Cheezi and Chungu attacked them with red flowers. Beshte used his strength to dispatch of the two, and Kion wondered why the attack had been so odd.

Later, Cheezi and Chungu joined forces with Tamka, Nduli, and Goigoi after they realized Thurston had been lying to them. As the Outlanders debated which part of Thurston to eat first, Thurston advised them to "panic and run." Just then, the Lion Guard appeared and chased off the Outlanders.[26]

Hyena Resistance[]

When Jasiri formed the Hyena Resistance to counter the Army of Scar, Chungu joined the rest of his clan in fighting them. He fled when his fellow Outlanders were defeated.[27]

Attack on Big Springs[]

One day, Chungu and his clan launched an attack on Big Springs, but were defeated by Shujaa. Later, Chungu and the rest of the Army of Scar attacked Basi's pod again, but were defeated by the Lion Guard and Shujaa.[28]

Attack on Makuu's watering hole[]

Yeah, five against... Two, three, four... Uh, heh. Against a lot of us.

Per Scar's orders, the Army of Scar besieged Makuu's float at their watering hole. The Lion Guard soon appeared and ordered the Outlanders to leave. Chungu boasted that the Guard was outnumbered, but they revealed that they had brought along many Pride Lander allies. In the ensuing fight between the Outlanders and the Pride Landers, the hyenas charged at Bupu's herd, only to be kicked away. Chungu went on to fight Mbeya. Eventually, the Outlanders were defeated, and Kion used the Roar of the Elders to blow them away.[29]

Cheezi and Chungu cower before Simba.

Upon learning about Makini's upcoming mpando mpaya, Scar planned an attack on Mizimu Grove. On the day of the celebration, the Army of Scar watched from a distance, and Chungu remarked that this would be a show that the Pride Landers would never forget. Together, the Outlanders charged into battle, and the Pride Landers rose up to defend themselves. In the ensuing battle, Cheezi and Chungu chased a young aardvark but were stopped by Simba. Suddenly, Scar appeared in a fire and threatened to overtake the entirety of the Pride Lands. Frightened by Scar's unexpected appearance, the remaining Pride Landers fled Mizimu Grove, and Kion used the Roar of the Elders to expel the Army of Scar.[30]

Battle for the Pride Lands[]

Cheezi and Chungu swim to safety.

Over the next few seasons, the Army of Scar waged war on the Pride Lands, only to get repeatedly chased off by the Lion Guard and Jasiri's clan. One day, Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu guarded the remnants of Kilio Valley. Cheezi asked why they could not go back to their den in the Outlands, and Chungu added that their den was nice and warm. Janja replied that they were making sure that the Lion Guard did not reclaim Kilio Valley for the elephants, to which Cheezi and Chungu expressed disinterest in fighting the Lion Guard anymore. Chungu remarked that the Guard's attacks had gotten worse since they had grown older and that they had the Pride Landers to help them. Janja started to wonder if Jasiri's perspective on the Circle of Life was right after all, since her clan seemed happy to work with the Lion Guard, but when Cheezi and Chungu asked him for elaboration, he brushed them aside.

That night, Shupavu led Janja's clan to the Lair of the Lion Guard. Chungu marveled at the number of Pride Landers at Pride Rock, and Janja explained that Scar wanted to attack them while they were all in one place. As the hyenas talked, Shupavu hushed them and reminded them that they did not want to give their presence away. Just then, Chungu heard rustling in the grass, only for Goigoi to appear and reveal that he was preparing to start a fire at Pride Rock. Once Goigoi had left, Shupavu led the clan to the Lair's entrance and explained that they needed to get the Lion Guard's attention and keep them distracted. Chungu asked how they would do that, and Janja replied that he knew what to do.

Chungu and his clan form an alliance with the Pride Landers.

While flying around Pride Rock, Ono noticed Janja's clan entering the Lair of the Lion Guard, and the Lion Guard resolved to stop the hyenas. Chungu alerted Janja to the Lion Guard's presence, and he, in turn, ordered his clan to scatter. As the Lion Guard chased the hyenas around the Lair, Cheezi and Chungu marveled at the Lair's many wall paintings. As they did so, Janja reminded them that they could run anywhere but out. Before long, Janja realized that Pride Rock was on fire and ordered his clan to follow him to safety. However, while Janja managed to escape the Lair, the rest of his clan got trapped inside by a burning branch. Cheezi and Chungu called out desperately for help, and Janja decided to appeal to Jasiri for assistance, since Scar had double-crossed them.

Once Janja had gone, Cheezi asked if they should jump through the burning branch, but Chungu reminded him that they were not that dumb. Just then, Kion ordered the hyenas to back away from the fire, and they obeyed. The Lion Guard quickly formed a plan: swim from Beshte's pool to Lake Shangaza, then return to Pride Rock. Cheezi and Chungu asked if they could accompany the Lion Guard, and Kion declared that, because he believed in the Circle of Life, they could. The hyenas subsequently jumped into Beshte's pool and swam to safety alongside the Lion Guard. Upon reaching the surface, Bunga declared that they must do that again, and Cheezi and Chungu agreed.

Cheezi and Chungu apologize for attacking the rhinoceroses.

No sooner had the Lion Guard escaped when Scar appeared in the flames of Pride Rock and told the Pride Landers that the Lion Guard had perished in the fire. However, the team revealed that they had survived, to the Pride Landers' joy. Despite his failure to kill the Lion Guard, Scar urged the Pride Landers to abandon their home, then disappeared with a malicious laugh. Once Scar had gone, the Pride Landers despaired over their chances against him. However, Janja and Jasiri arrived, and Janja informed Kion that he could destroy Scar's spirit by using the Roar of the Elders inside the volcano. Heeding Janja's advice, Kion and Simba readied an invasion force for the following morning, and Janja and Jasiri declared that all the hyenas would help. Kion then sent everyone to get some rest, and Chungu marveled at how happy the Pride Landers were. Unbeknownst to the hyenas, Shupavu had witnessed their reformation and relayed what she had seen to Scar.

The next morning, Cheezi, Chungu, and Janja assembled with the other Pride Landers to invade the Outlands. As the Pride Landers charged into battle, the Outlanders noted the hyenas' reformation but remained optimistic that Scar's intelligence would win them the battle. In the midst of the fight, Cheezi and Chungu almost attacked the rhinoceroses out of habit, but Janja reminded them that they were on the same side as the Pride Landers. Chungu apologized to the rhinoceroses, and Janja encouraged them to continue charging against Scar's army. Eventually, Kion defeated Scar, and the Pride Landers triumphed over the Army of Scar. In the wake of the battle, Cheezi asked what would happen to them, and Chungu remarked that that was a good question. Janja nominated Jasiri to rule the Outlands, and she announced that, as long as the Outlanders respected the Circle of Life, the Outlands would be peaceful. Janja added that those who objected would have to answer to Jasiri's new clan, which included himself and his minions. Mzingo proposed a run-off election, but after Cheezi and Chungu growled at him, he agreed to Jasiri's promotion.[31]

Return61

Cheezi, Chungu, Janja, and Bunga take on Shabaha.

While on the way home from the Tree of Life, the Lion Guard passed through the Outlands with Janja and Jasiri. As the group was walking through the Outlands, Cheezi and Chungu intercepted them and pounced happily on Janja. Chungu confessed that they had thought that they would never see Janja again, and Janja pointed out sheepishly that he had not been gone for that long. Madoa soon approached and revealed that Zira's pride had already entered the Pride Lands.

Together, the Lion Guard, the hyenas, and the vultures headed for the border of the Outlands and the Pride Lands, only to get attacked by Vitani and her self-formed Lion Guard. During the fight, Cheezi, Chungu, Janja, and Bunga fought Shabaha. Though Bunga attempted to attack her, she grabbed him and threw him at Janja. She then laughed maniacally, which scared off Cheezi and Chungu. Kion nearly used the Roar to take out Vitani and her lionesses, but Kiara intervened and revealed that Zira's pride had joined the Pride Landers. Kovu added that Zira had died. With the conflict settled, the Outlanders returned to their territory in peace.[32]

Kion's coronation[]

Cheezi, Chungu, Janja, and Jasiri attended Kion's wedding to Rani at the Tree of Life.[32]

Physical appearance[]

Chungu is large, robust, and well-built. He has pale gray fur, with a lighter-colored chest. His eye rims, his muzzle, and the spots on his back are darker gray, while his ears, hair, and paws are black. He has several notches in his ears.[2]

Personality and traits[]

That's what I always thought. I just didn't think of it till now. When you said it. Hear that, Cheezi? The smart bird says I'm the smart one.

Return9

Cheezi and Chungu show considerable fondness of and loyalty to their leader, Janja.

Chungu is dim-witted and slow. Like his fellow hyenas, he lusts for food and power, and defies the Circle of Life, especially if there is food at stake. He tends to be slow on the uptake and rarely understands the more intricate details of Janja's plans, much to his leader's frustration. He is also oblivious to the fact that the Lion Guard does not like Janja's clan.

Chungu is a coward and tends to run away in the face of uncertain odds.[2] Like Cheezi, Chungu cares for his leader despite Janja's constant ridicules about the duo. He even likes Janja's nickname for them: "fur-brains."[12] After the battle for the Pride Lands, Chungu reformed along with his clan and began to respect the Circle of Life.[31]
