Can't Wait to be Queen is a book inspired by The Lion Guard. It is the book adaptation of the episode of the same name. It was published by Disney Press on January 19, 2016.

Publisher's summary[]

"Read along with Disney! When Simba and Nala have to leave Pride Rock for a few days, Kiara becomes queen! She is in charge of everything in the Pride Lands—including the Lion Guard. Kion has to decide: should he listen to his big sister and queen or lead the Lion Guard the way he thinks is best?"[1]

Synopsis[]

One afternoon, Kion was sharpening his claws on a tree when his sister, Kiara, ordered him to leave, as she had found the tree first. He protested that she could not tell him what to do, only for their father, Simba, to counter that she actually could. He clarified that she would be serving as the queen of Pride Rock for a few days. Kion questioned if something was wrong, and Simba explained that he, Nala, and Zazu would be attending the funeral of an old friend. Uncertain, Kiara asked how long they would be gone, and Simba assured her that he had been nervous about ruling the Pride Lands at first too. He then iterated his faith in her and the Lion Guard.

The next morning, Simba and Nala departed, and Kiara began her first day as queen. Though Kiara's friend, Zuri, urged the Lion Guard to make way for their queen, Kion grumbled to his friends that his sister was only queen while their parents were away. From nearby, Mzingo the vulture spied on the group, noting that Kiara had been left in charge of the Pride Lands.

Meanwhile, Kiara asked Ono for the morning report, and he informed her that a herd of elands was migrating along the river. He added that he had spotted several bee hives nearby. Putting two and two together, Kiara exclaimed that the bees might sting the elands and sow chaos. She promptly ordered the Lion Guard to divert the herd so they would not run into the bee hives.

Annoyed that his sister was trying to boss him around, Kion decided to move the bees instead. However, the situation spun out of control, with the bees chasing the Lion Guard and the eland herd. Afterwards, Kion reported to Kiara at Pride Rock that the mission had not been a total disaster, but she disagreed, then urged him to listen to his queen next time. She asked if he had forgotten that their father had left her in charge, and he remarked sourly that it was pretty hard to forget.

In the meantime, Mzingo informed Janja the hyena about the situation in the Pride Lands. Noting that Kiara and Kion were not getting along well, Janja mused that it would be a shame if their quarrels led to trouble in their kingdom. Shortly afterwards, Mzingo convened with Kiara atop Pride Rock, presenting her with a peace proposal from Janja. Uneasy, she questioned why Janja had not come himself, and Mzingo replied that he was not welcome in the Pride Lands; thus, he needed to meet her in the Outlands. Kiara promised to think it over.

Upon learning about Janja's proposal, Kion declared that it was a trap. Furious, Kiara asserted that he just could not stand that she might be right again, like with the bees, and resolved to meet Janja anyway. Kion clapped back that she was on her own. He then stormed off, only for the spirit of his grandfather, Mufasa, to appear before him. Mufasa noted that something was troubling Kion, and Kion explained that Kiara should not trust Janja. In answer, Mufasa urged his grandson to give Kiara his support, especially when she was wrong.

Moved by his grandfather's words, Kion returned to Pride Rock, only to find that Kiara was already gone. Immediately, the Lion Guard set off to rescue her. At the same time, Janja and his clan surrounded Kiara in the Outlands, and Janja resolved to use her as ransom against Simba. At that moment, the Lion Guard arrived and drove the hyenas away. Once safe, Kiara thanked Kion for having saved her life and admitted that she had been wrong to trust Janja. He similarly conceded that he should have listened to her about the bees.

Later, after Simba and Nala returned to Pride Rock, Simba asked for a report. Kiara was unsure how to respond, so Kion interjected that she had been able to handle the situation. He commented that she would make a great queen someday, and she thanked him for believing in her. He asked cheekily if she could not wait to be queen, and she answered that she could maybe wait a little longer.
