Bushbuck's Husband is a story from the Rafiki Remembers magazine collection. It was published in the 1990s as part of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series.
Synopsis[]
When the beautiful young Bushbuck comes of age, many suitors vie to win her hand in marriage. Red Antelope is the first suitor to arrive and announces his intentions to her entire village. The next morning, Bushbuck asks Red Antelope to fetch her some honey, but he is unable to climb a tree to get it. The other animals send him away, thinking that he is not fit to be Bushbuck's husband if he cannot fetch her a bit of honey, and he leaves in dejection.
After his defeat, Red Antelope tells the story to Ape, who decides that he could make a good husband for Bushbuck. He arrives in Bushbuck's village and is welcomed for the night. When morning comes, Bushbuck asks Ape to fetch her some honey, but he proves too heavy to climb the tree to get it. Like Red Antelope, he is sent away in shame.
A third animal desires to win Bushbuck's heart, Mouse. He had suspected that Red Antelope or Ape could succeed, but when he finds out that they have failed, he comes to the village to make his own attempt. Come morning, he sets off to get Bushbuck her honey. Unlike Red Antelope and Ape, Mouse is able to scale the tree and carry the honey down on a leaf. He brings the honey to Bushbuck and is allowed to marry her, for he was able to get the honey when the handsome Red Antelope and the strong Ape could not.
