Echolocation. The bats make a sound, then listen for the echo. Depending on how loud it is, the bats know which tunnel to take. If it's a loud echo, it's a dead-end. But if the echo fades away, then there's an opening, and that's the right tunnel.

Bats are a species of animal native to the marsh, the Outlands, and the Pride Lands.

Physical characteristics

Bats are small- to medium-sized creatures, with large ears, pig-like snouts, and wings. Most bats have brown fur, with patches of white on their foreheads and chests, and brown eyes.

Sociocultural characteristics

In the Outlands, bats are shown to live in caves, whereas in the Pride Lands, they are shown to live on the insides of trees. Bats tend to live in groups. In the marsh, bats live underground. There is a colony called the Mekundu Bats that lives in the Pride Lands. Bats are known to navigate dark spaces by using echolocation.

"Lions of the Outlands"

During the "Lions Over All" musical sequence, several bats flee a cave as Kion and Zira enter.

"Ono and the Egg"

During the "A Real Meal" musical sequence, bats follow a congo line of animals into Mpishi's beak.

"Marsh of Mystery"

Ono and Makini fall into a hole in the marsh. While underground, they encounter bats, which swarm past and frighten Ono. This gives Ono the idea to use echolation to navigate the tunnels.
