Publisher's summary[]

"Children ages 2 to 5 will enjoy reading this adventurous story about Kion and the rest of the amazing Lion Guard as they rescue a baby baboon from some hungry vultures! This full-color Little Golden Book retells an episode of the hit Disney Junior series."[1]

Synopsis[]

One morning, the Lion Guard noticed a parliament of vultures chasing a baby baboon. Working together, the Guard surrounded the vultures until their leader, Mzingo, called the retreat. Once the parliament was gone, Kion assured the baby baboon that he was safe, while Fuli lamented how difficult the day had been.

Just then, a thunderstorm moved in overhead, causing the river to flood. Terrified, the baby baboon fell into the river, and Kion ordered Fuli to save him, as she was the only one who was fast enough to catch up to him. As he was swept downstream, the baby baboon managed to catch on to an overhanging tree branch, and Fuli pulled him to safety. To her disgust, he gave her a hug.

The rest of the Guard soon caught up to Fuli and informed her that the floodwaters had swept away the strip of land that led to Urembo Meadow, thus trapping Kiara and her friends, Tiifu and Zuri, on an island. While Kion resolved to save his sister, he ordered Fuli to return the baby baboon to Nyani Grove.

Along the way to Nyani Grove, the baby baboon playfully evaded Fuli by swinging on tree branches. Meanwhile, the rest of the Lion Guard journeyed to Urembo Meadow to save Kiara and her friends. Getting an idea, Kion commanded Beshte to push a tree into the floodwaters so as to create a bridge to Kiara's island. However, the island's edge simply crumbled under the tree's weight and sank into the water. Kiara, Tiifu, and Zuri attempted to push a boulder to the edge of the island, but it rolled too fast, falling into the river.

Upon hearing about Kiara's idea from Ono, Kion suggested that they combine their two plans. While the Guard pushed a boulder into the floodwaters from the shore, Kiara and her friends knocked over a dead tree so that it fell on top of the boulder, creating a bridge. The cubs then crossed to safety, and the Guard celebrated their success.

Across the Pride Lands, Fuli attempted to return the baby baboon to Nyani Grove, but the baboon leader informed her that the infant's troop dwelled atop Mapango Cliffs. She started toward the distant cliffs, only for the baby baboon to jump into a nearby tree and hide amidst the foliage. Just as she noticed his strange silence, he started to pelt her with fruit. Though she warned him not to continue, she felt herself growing fond of him.

Eventually, the pair reached Mapango Cliffs, where the baby baboon's mother greeted him joyously. Fuli started to leave when Mzingo's parliament suddenly swept out of the sky and attacked the baby baboon. While the baboons threw fruit at the vultures to keep them at bay, Fuli began to scale the cliffs, heading toward the battle. Upon reaching the top, she pounced on Mzingo, pinned him to the ground, and ordered him to call off his attack. Seeing no path to victory, he reluctantly surrendered, and he and his parliament flew away.

With the baby baboon safe, the baboons began to chant Fuli's name, and the infant's mother thanked her for her help. The baby baboon then ran up to Fuli and gave her a hug. This time, she happily hugged him back. Afterwards, she rejoined her friends and shared that the baby baboon was home safe. Bunga remarked that she must be happy to be rid of the baby baboon, and she agreed. However, inwardly, she missed the pesky little baboon.
