Aardvarks are a species of animal native to the Pride Lands. They are burrowing animals who feed on fruits and grubs, and are preyed upon by hyenas.

Physical characteristics

The aardvark is a four-legged species of moderate size. It generally sports long ears, an elongated snout, a furless tail, and sharp digging claws. Most aardvarks have brown pelts, with lighter fur along their chests and muzzles, and darker fur on their legs.

Sociocultural characteristics

Those aardvarks who reside in the Pride Lands live in burrows, generally near a source of water, and feed on fruits and grubs. They can be quite territorial and do not take lightly to intrusions or other animals stealing their food. Hyenas are known to prey upon aardvarks.

History

Muhanga waits in line to receive advice from Bunga, who has proclaimed himself to be a sage.

"Can't Wait to be Queen"

Simba presides over Muhangus and Muhanga's wedding.

"The Kupatana Celebration"

The aardvarks have a stand-off with the jackals

On the day of the Kupatana celebration, the jackals disrupt the aardvark dens. Muhangus demands an explanation, and Beshte assures him that the situation will be handled. However, Goigoi eats one of Muhangus's fruits, which infuriates Muhangus and prompts Muhanga to accuse the jackals of theft. Eventually, the Lion Guard convinces the jackals to move elsewhere.

Later, Muhangus appears during the "Jackal Style" musical sequence. While one jackal pup distracts him, another lies down in front of his den.

That evening, both Muhangus and Muhanga attend the Kupatana celebration. However, the celebration is disrupted by the jackals, who attempt to eat the Pride Landers. However, the animals fight back and surround the jackals.

"The Call of the Drongo"

Muhangus is frightened by the sound of Janja's voice. He, along with several other animals, approaches the Lion Guard and asks for their help. Kion follows Muhangus to where he had heard Janja's voice, and the two find not only that Janja is nowhere to be seen, but that the grubs Muhangus had been eating are likewise missing. The animals reconvene and discover they have all made the same discovery. Just then, they hear Janja's voice, and a frightened Muhangus elects to stay behind while the Lion Guard deals with the intruder.

"Too Many Termites"

Muhangus and Muhanga mistake a pack of aardwolves for hyenas. They appeal to the Lion Guard for help, and Kion uses the Roar of the Elders to banish the supposed intruders. Later, Simba informs the Lion Guard that aardwolves like to sleep in aardvark dens.

Trivia

• In the January 1990 version of The Lion King, an aardvark named Daabi served as a close friend of Simba's. She and her cousin aardvarks participated in the final battle, siding with Simba over Scar.
• During early production of The Lion King, aardvarks participated in the scrapped musical number "To Be King".
