The Guard always wins...as long as Kion is our team leader!
Bunga[src]

A Test for the Guard is a comic inspired by The Lion Guard. It was published by Panini Comics on August 24, 2017, as part of The Lion Guard Magazine.

Synopsis

After the Lion Guard saves a pair of gazelles from peril, Bunga praises Kion's ability to lead, asserting that he is the reason for the Lion Guard's successes. Rafiki happens to overhear Bunga's comment and pulls Kion aside to speak with him privately.

Later, Zazu questions the Lion Guard as to where Kion is, and Rafiki claims that he had last seen Kion heading in the direction of the swamp. Fuli worries about Kion traveling to such a dangerous area alone, and the rest of the team agrees to find him and bring him home safely. Beshte suggests that he take the lead since he knows the area well, but Ono argues that he can lead the team better by his keen eyesight.

At this point in the comic, the reader can either choose to follow Beshte's plan or Ono's.

Beshte's path

Beshte leads the Lion Guard into the swamp, warning them to be wary of snakes and shifting sand. The team eventually pinpoints Kion, who is lying, eyes closed, in the midst of the swamp, with a crocodile lurking nearby. Ono declares that Kion has fainted, and the Lion Guard navigates their way around the snakes to their friend's side.

Ono's path

Ono follows Kion's paw prints to the swamp, where the Lion Guard sees Kion lying unconscious in the midst of the swamp, with a crocodile lurking nearby. The team hastens to their friend's side.

Ending

As the Lion Guard finally finishes crossing the water, they notice that Kion has disappeared. Just then, Kion reappears behind them and reveals that the menacing crocodile had been their friend, Pua. Beshte questions Rafiki on the situation, and Rafiki explains that the team had been becoming too reliant on Kion's leadership and that the swamp situation had been a test. Kion praises his team for having passed, and the rest of the Lion Guard rejoices. Meanwhile, Rafiki draws Fuli aside to speak with her.

Kion suggests that they return home, but as they turn to leave, they realize that Fuli has gone missing. Bunga declares that the Lion Guard must go through the test all over again, while Fuli and Rafiki laugh from a nearby patch of grass.
