How Can Kopa Fit in the Lion King Canon Storyline?
At the end of the Lion King, Simba and Nala’s cub is presented to the Pridelanders to see their future ruler. In the Lion King Six New Adventure Series, we find out that the cub is Kopa, Simba’s fist-born cub. But where is he in the Lion King 2? Though Disney says that the cub in the Lion King is Kiara, this is obviously not true. For one thing, the two cubs have different fur colors. The least obvious parts is that in the Lion King, Rafiki is holding the cub already. In the Lion King 2, Nala gives Rafiki the cub. Also, Timon and Pumbaa are on the edge of Pride Rock with Simba, Nala, and Rafiki in the Lion King. In the Lion King 2, the duo is off to the side, expressing their displeasure at the cub being a girl.
So if Kopa is real, how can he possibly properly fit in the Lion King timeline without messing everything up? Scientifically, a lion gestation period is aproxementally 110 days, or about 3.5 months. So this means Nala had Kopa at least 4 months after Simba became the rightful ruler of the Pridelands. When Kiara is born, the Lions of the Outlands have already been around for a while, properly establishing a home and leadership positions. Simba is also not the type of King that will exile you if you disagree with what he says right away. Unlike Scar, he is a fair ruler, who is willing to look at someone else’s point of view. So, he exiling Zira and Scar’s followers was a building conflict since he became King. This is why Vitani and Kovu are shown in Rafiki’s painting in the Lion Guard. If you also look at Zira’s oldest child, Nuka, he does have some similarities to Scar. Could Scar have possibly sired Nuka? If this is true, Kopa wouldn’t be that much younger than Nuka. Male lions typically leave their pride around three years old. At this age, their manes are still growing out. Remind you of someone? Scientifically, lions with a darker mane are more attractive to lionesses, which would be Kopa’s advantage to finding a mate. Being the son of Simba and Nala, Kopa would be smart, and already be planning for his future. Being the first born child, Kopa would succeed Simba to the throne. However, what if Kopa did not want to rule the Pridelands and decided to leave to form a pride of his own? If Kopa is anything like his siblings, he would have thought of others before himself, meaning he probably left the Pridelands while Nala was pregnant with Kiara, or soon after she was born. This way, Kopa new that he would be leaving the leadership of the Pridelands in good paws. In the books, Kopa is starting to grow a brown mane. You may wonder why in the Lion King 2, Zira says that Kovu was hand picked by Scar himself. If this was true, it would completely make this video false, making him older than Kopa, But, what if Zira’s words were just a lie or a metaphor to get Simba to abandon the thrown. Since Scar meet Nuka, he new that he wasn’t the brightest lion. He may have told Zira that her second born son will be King instead, explaining Nuka’s jealousy of Kovu. This major conflict, may have also made Kopa leave the Pridelands. So, in conclusion, Kopa is real, but born during the conflict between Zira and Simba. He did not want to be the future king because of this ongoing conflict, so he left the Pridelands sometime right before or immediately after Kiara was born, knowing he was leaving the Pridelands with a future ruler.
I personally believe Kion was inspired by Kopa; both are the sons of Simba and Nala, have a reddish head tuft, idolize Grandpa Muffy, and make a spunky hyena friend. I do wish Kopa had been included in the official canon. Maybe someday...
