Pumbaa, Timon

No wonder everyone loves Ned and he's the most popular guy in the jungle! Why can't we all be like him?
Timon to Pumbaa[src]

Ned was a male elephant.

After seeing the respect Ned got from the other animals, Pumbaa decided to become an elephant himself. After Timon physically transformed Pumbaa into an elephant, the two showed off Pumbaa's new look to Ned and his hippopotamus henchmen, who laughed at and ridiculed the "Pumbaaphant." However, after Pumbaa rescued Ned from falling off a cliff, Ned had a change of heart and suggested that Pumbaa join his group as an honorary elephant.

Ned was the president of the Good Luck Club. However, the club began to decline in members due to Ned bringing in an unlucky jar. Upon realizing that Timon wanted to join his club, Ned tricked the meerkat into thinking that the jar was lucky and that he must protect it for the day in order to become a member of the club. Eventually, Ned smashed the unlucky jar and got eaten by piranhas.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Ned lived in the jungle, where he was considerably popular.[1] He ran his own Good Luck Club.[2]

Pumbaaphant[]

UBAE Timon & Ned5

Ned and his henchmen laugh at Pumbaa's new appearance.

Timon and Pumbaa admired Ned the elephant for his popularity. Timon pointed out all the benefits an elephant enjoyed over every other animal, including a trunk for showers, birds that rode on its back, and long tusks. Pumbaa began contemplating becoming an elephant. The next morning, he excitedly asked Timon for help in transforming himself into an elephant. Because Pumbaa's goal was to become more popular, Timon jumped at the opportunity.

The first step was for Pumbaa to become bigger and fatter. Timon began shoveling worms into Pumbaa's mouth. The warthog was happy at first, but as he became full, he grew miserable and thought that perhaps he should be himself. The next step, Timon said, was to condition his friend's mind to never forget. Timon soon became frustrated at Pumbaa's slow wit and poor memory. Pumbaa pointed out that Timon was not popular because he was grumpy.

UBAE Pumbaa & Ned2

Ned offers Pumbaa an honorary spot in his clique.

The final step Timon took was to stretch Pumbaa's snout out to be an elephant trunk. He wedged Pumbaa's head between two palm trees and hooked a rope to his nose. He then rolled a boulder over the edge, and it pulled the rope on Pumbaa's nose, stretching it to a disproportionate length. Timon congratulated his friend on his successful transformation into an elephant and convinced him to gloat in Ned's face. Pumbaa, however, did not want to show his elephant form to Ned, as he had a feeling that he would get laughed at and made fun of. Timon told his friend that he would be right there with him and that he would help him.

When they arrived, Ned and his two hippopotamus friends pointed and laughed at the "Pumbaaphant." They laughed so hard that, as they were walking away, they plummeted over a cliff. Though he was barely hanging on, Ned still tried to make fun of Pumbaa. Eventually, he grabbed on to one of Pumbaa's tusks and was towed up. Ned then had a change of heart and offered Pumbaa an honorary spot in his clique. However, Pumbaa refused, saying that he was proud to be exactly who he was: a warthog.[1]

Good Luck Club[]

Ned's Good Luck Club lost all its members, save a zebra. The zebra told Ned that the reason no one ever showed up to his club anymore was that he had bought an unlucky jar. When Ned stated that the jar was not that unlucky, the zebra reminded the elephant of the misfortunes that had befallen Goldie, a smiling crocodile who had caught an unlucky disease that had caused all his teeth to fall out. This had left him broke and forced him to move back with his mother. The zebra then mentioned Horatio, a happy and jolly hippopotamus who had taken weight gain pills that had turned out to be weight loss pills. The zebra then lost most of his stripes and fled, which made Ned agree with him.

UIL Timon & Ned3

Ned tells Timon to protect the "lucky" jar in order to join his club.

After learning that Timon wanted to join his club, Ned went to the meerkat and asked him why he wanted to join. Timon pointed out the lucky things that were happening to them. Ned then told Timon that in order to become a member, he had to protect the unlucky jar for one whole day. However, he tricked Timon into thinking that the jar was lucky. After reading a book about bad luck, the meerkat became superstitious.

Protecting the jar proved to be a challenge for Timon, as Pumbaa brought home a panther cub, since black cats meant bad luck according to the book Timon was reading. When the jar got destroyed and Timon found out about the panther cub, the meerkat decided to stick the jar back together to fool Ned. He also told Pumbaa to take the panther cub back to where he had found it.

UIL Ned15

Ned before getting eaten by piranhas.

When Timon brought Ned the jar, with the pieces glued together to fool the elephant, Ned was not convinced and broke it with his trunk. The elephant then made fun of Timon's unluckiness, laughed at him, and decided to humiliate him by telling the whole jungle what an "unlucky loser" he was.

Just then, the panther cub showed up and scared Ned, which made the elephant fall off a canyon and land in a ravine. Ned was proud to be away from the unlucky jar but soon got surrounded and eaten by piranhas. After Timon and Pumbaa witnessed Ned's death, Timon praised the panther cub for having saved him from major humiliation. He realized that the panther cub was not such bad luck after all. The cub then became Timon and Pumbaa's new friend.[2]

Physical appearance[]

Ned was a large elephant. He had gray skin, with brown toes, pink inner ears, and long white tusks. His eyes were black.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Let me take a moment to point at you and laugh derisively.
―Ned to Timon[src]
UBAE Ned3

Ned enjoys being pampered by his sycophants.

Ned was arrogant and pompous. Because of his immense popularity, he looked down on other animals, especially lowly ones like Pumbaa. He enjoyed bossing around his two hippopotamus friends and ridiculed Timon and Pumbaa whenever they tried to prove their worth to him. Despite his ego, Ned had a change of heart after Pumbaa saved his life and even offered the warthog an honorary position in his clique.[1] Ned was quite superstitious, as he believed panthers were bad luck. Ultimately, he was selfish and vindictive, as he had been planning to ruin Timon's reputation before he got eaten by piranhas.[2]
